Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album has a Bayesian average rating of 72.0/100, a mean average of 71.5/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 71.5/100. The standard deviation for this album is 18.8.

The Age of Miracles is the eleventh studio album by Mary Chapin Carpenter, and her finest since she left a major label. This is her third set produced by Matt Rollings, and thankfully his production is top notch this time, compared to the less desirable work on The Calling. Carpenter's vocals and guitar are front and center, while the backup singers and musicians do their best to compliment the singer, adding little licks and nuances to keep the record diverse and interesting.
The meat of the record starts with a pleasant surprise: I Put My Ring Back On, Carpenter's most straightforward pop-rock song since....anything on Time* Sex* Love*. And my, it's even a little twangy and a welcome change of pace.
4 June 1989 brings us to Tianneman Square, similar to how John Doe 24 from Stones in the Road brings us to another time and place. This record presents itself a lot like Stones in the Road: Solid folk songs with thoughtful guitar parts and familiar melodies. Next is I Was a Bird, a really nice folk song with harmony vocals with folk-bluegrass musician Alison Krauss, though it would have been nice if Krauss had a bigger presence in this track.
The finest track is Mrs Hemingway, a modest melodic masterpiece. I Have a Need for Solitude is surprising sublime, with hints of steel guitar complementing the acoustic guitar picking.
The last track and the title track are also nice melodic songs with tasteful guitar licks. Overall, a welcome addition to Carpenter's studio albums catalog.
Highly recommended.
A-Side: I Put My Ring Back On
B-Side: Mrs. Hemingway
The stand out tracks on this album are Zephyr, The Age Of Miracles and The Way I Feel.
