A wonderful synthesis of Hendrix licks, soul, doo wop, art rock, and NYC punk.
Highlights: Love Dog, Crying, DLZ, Golden Age, Red Dress
i like this more than cookie mountain. i think it's more consistent.
cookie mountain is better
They've hit the big time record label and they've put out a big time album to match. They've taken most of the best of their first couple albums, thrown on a glossy, production sheen, and served up an album that many publications (and i agree) can be a soundtrack of Obama's (and hopefully our country's) ascendency with lyrics like "And oh, you can't stop what's comin' up / You're never gonna stop, gonna live it up" as well as a recrimination of the Dumya era charging "Congratulations on the mess you made of things / I'm trying to reconstruct the air and all that brings / And oxidation is the compromise you own / But this is beginning to feel like the dog wants her bones". This album is nearly as catchy as a whole like "wolf like me" was (see "Dancing Choose") and attempts as much a statement of the times as "OK Computer" mastered. Doo-wop, rap, chamber-pop, indie rock aesthetic -- it's all here with lyrics as meticulously crafted and varied.
Best track: Golden Age
Good not great.
perfect follow up to return to cookie mountain.
A strong album certainly, but I also feel it is a bit overrated by music critics. They are reaching for something unique and new, but they have yet to make a really great album.
Not quite "Return from Cookie Mountain" good, but still a great album nonetheless. Top 5 of 2008 for sure.
Why is it that the majority of the best albums of the naughties came out in 2008 it truly was one of the most important years for modern music in general
