Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album is rated in the top 18% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 74.1/100, a mean average of 73.6/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 74.2/100. The standard deviation for this album is 13.0.

If this album sounds complete and assured as far as “debut” releases go, it’s actually unsurprising considering Tweedys career with Uncle Tupelo spanned 3 full albums and a couple of collections, and that “AM” hit the shelves within a month of U.T’s demise
Though I’m not sure about the Arctic Monkeys ‘AM’ tribute album released in 2013, it sounds nothing like this album
Actually a pretty fun record.
Clever lyrics and catchy tunes. Not sure why it isn't more popular.
Ignore my last comment. This is a good record. This proved Tweedy could pen an album nearly all on his own. If the extra twang is too much for you, examine the bare songs themselves. Usually they are simple but thoughtful. This debut captures a period where a new band is starting out, and though they are not sure of which direction they want to go in, they are definitely on the rise to greatness here. It's all just fun here.
Track Pick: Box Full of Letters
It's okay, but the songs are all so throwaway and unmemorable. Nothing stands out, it all just goes by without anything staying with you, without anything really happening. It doesn't help that all the songs sound the same. Not a patch on Being there.
Personally my favorite Wilco album
Certainly not as good as YHF or Summerteeth, but very under appreciated.
A record with some good times and some ok times. There's nothing bad here among the lot. The lyrics can be bland and the instrumentation pretty simple, but that doesn't mean that there are no stellar moments here. "Casino Queen" is great and "I Must Be High" is a great band song. It will never be your favorite, but why does that mean you should overlook it?
Anyone listening to Wilco's debut album can quickly conclude that this effort is all style over substance. This is Jeff Tweedy trying to fill an album all on his own, trying to capitalize on the successful style of his former band Uncle Tupelo, but also trying to make music that was mainstream enough to get some commercial success for a new band just starting out. The result is really rocking alt-country (that fans of the genre will love) with lots of uninteresting lyrics. The first half consists mostly of Tweedy's trademark upbeat rockers that he was famous for in Uncle Tupelo. The last half has a lot of slow burners that don't really hold a candle to the first half. Basically, this is Wilco before the band found its identity and though it means well, A.M. ends up being a pedestrian Uncle Tupelo record.
Yeah its good. But, after the Tupelo split, Son Volt came out with Trace the same year. I would much rather listen to that every time.
