Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 1% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 80.5/100, a mean average of 79.7/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 80.6/100. The standard deviation for this album is 13.9.

A little inconsistent in my opinion. It gets boring at times, but it has some really beautiful highlights.

A brilliant debut release that is full of diverse instrumentation which are all performed to a high degree and they make the album a joy to revisit. The flourishes of instrumentation on songs like We Rule The School and My Wandering Days Are Over make for such enjoyable listens and also demonstrate how good the group are. This is such an intelligent album musically with it being multi layered and kept interesting due to how much they manage to cram into 40 minutes. This is impressive because they make the songs feel grand and important whilst also keeping them at a relatable level with the rawness of the music and the teen like lyrics. However, they do wear their influences on their sleeves and hopefully will have branched out on later releases to make their own distinct sound. Overall, there is a lot of greatness to enjoy on here and I always have a blast with this record.

Folky, poppy and down-to-earth music is always in dire need.

Ok I get it, B&S aren’t everyone’s cup of tea and I understand how the extreme tweeness can grate but haters be damned I love this band and to think they released not one but two cracking albums in 1996 coming from complete and utter obscurity is simply mind blowing

Proof that when it comes to great music you either have it or you don’t and Stuart Murdoch has IT

Wonderful debut album by Belle & Sebastian, it has a little influence from a couple of other favourite debuts of mine - Velvet Underground & Nico and The Smiths.

A very well-written record. Quite spare and simple musically speaking, it works because it gives the vocals more of a spotlight, since it's the lyrics that are the all-important factor here . the vocals are pretty as well in their own unique way.

Che bellezza e che delicatezza aveva questo esordio dei Belle and Sebastian, pur ancora grezzo e fragile al confronto del loro terzo e perfetto disco.
