Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album is rated in the top 7% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 75.5/100, a mean average of 77.1/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 77.1/100. The standard deviation for this album is 12.5.

The Beast in Its Tracks--an album inspired by, and whose energy is animated by, a painful divorce that he went through--is Josh Ritter's Blood on the Tracks. Although there are definitely moments of bitterness and anger here, what is most admirable about this album is how hopeful and forgiving it is. This is best heard on the tender and absolutely lovely "Joy to You Baby," with its lyrics that I very much hope are true, for both Josh's sake and my own: "There's pain in whatever / We stumble upon / If I never had met you / You couldn't have gone / But then I couldn't have met you / We couldn't have been / I guess it all adds up / To joy to the end."
Josh Ritter continues to put out solid, acoustic-guitar-laden, americana/folk. Save a gloriously over-produced "historical conquests...", this has been the case his entire career. With songwriting this good, it's hard to call for change. "the beast in its tracks" is a hopeful, upbeat album despite Josh coming off a relationship breakup. (Supposedly, he recorded an entire album based on the souring relationship before junking it for this more positive outlook.) But there still are a couple of hints of breakup blues, as on "appleblossom rag", if that's your thing. The album doesn't mine the lyrical depths of "animal years" and the grand sonic scale of "historical conquests..." but it does fall nicely in line with his last album, "so runs the world away", an album borne off of acoustic guitar by a strong singer-songwriter, and that's plenty fine by itself.
Break up albums: So Hot right now. but seriously, its great. i think its Ritters best since The Animal Years. probably gonna be on repeat for a while.
On first listen, I really enjoyed this record. It's an absolute and total "Break up album" but damn ! There's some really sharp sharp songs about Jealousy and relationships. The song writing is stellar as usual. The instrumentation is a lot more straightforward acoustic than the previous Ritter albums since "Hello Starling". Highlights for me are "Bonfire", "A Certain Light", and "In Your Arms Again". Definitely recommended to any Josh Ritter fans put there.
