Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album is rated in the top 3% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 77.5/100, a mean average of 76.7/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 77.7/100. The standard deviation for this album is 16.3.

Not keen on the cover art or the spoken jibberish. It isn't one of his better albums IMO. Very disjointed.
frank Z is like Frank Krappa und ein very intelligent musician and artist. Splendid
Taken as an isolated work (not as a part of a larger project) this may be, to me, Zappa's strongest display of his abilities as a musical artist. Many of the tracks are autonomously great but it's the succession and assemblage of these ideas and compositions that I find really exhilarating. Zappa's talent as an orchestral composer is usually overstated while his genius for editing and producing (in evidence in his early albums and in Trout Mask Replica) is not mentioned enough. That's why I'm not that big of a fan of King Kong (too long and stable a jazz-fusion for my taste) but love the preceding rollicking cascade of ideas (and instruments) and the implicit and explicit interplay of richly arranged polyrhythmic melodic pieces with the more erudite modernist dissonant pieces, bits of spoken word, bits of live performances, traditional doo-wop melodies, solo performances, etc.
I have a vinyl version of this which doesn't have the 1/2 hour long movie interlude. The second best Zappa album behind Hot Rats imo
Besides the random movie excerpt shit, this is one of the top 5 Mothers albums.
While it isn't my favorite Mothers release, I do think it is the perfect culmination of all the ideas present in the early part of Zappa's career. It has the pop flavor of Freak Out as well as the heavy jazz influence of Hot Rats.
Weird, but great if taken as a whole work of art, including cover art and track titles.
"I'm so hot from this hamburger"
Hairymarx: That's just a bonus track added later on, so technically it does rank as another Zappa masterpiece for you ;D
This would rank as another Zappa masterpiece if not for the overlong and rambling film-clip interlude. Why, oh why?
