West Textures is the second studio album by Texas folk singer-songwriter Robert Earl Keen. Keen was part of the community of singer-songwriters from Texas that were more folk as far as imaginative lyrics, but we're marketed as country musicians.
Keen's first album for the Philo label was very low budget. Keen teamed up with producer Jim Rooney for this record. Rooney had produced two dazzling acoustic records for Nanci Griffith, and had also produced albums for John Prine, Jerry Jeff Walker and Townes van Zandt. He had a knack for capturing these folk artists with backing acoustic musicians, long before Americana music was established as a niche industry.
The result is a folk album that sounds like a bluegrass album. This is an excellent collection of folk songs. There is a nice trilogy of Western-Hispanic-tinged songs: Maria, Sonoras Death Row and Mariano that really makes this memorable. My personal highlights are the tender Leavin' Tennessee and Jennifer Johnson. The last element are the good-time songs: Road Goes on Forever, Five Pound Bass and It's The Little Things. These tracks offer nice counterpart to the moody tracks, but the comedy falls a little flat, at least on the latter two.
Overall, this is a really nice country-folk album and I highly recommend it.
