Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album has a Bayesian average rating of 72.5/100, a mean average of 72.5/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 72.5/100. The standard deviation for this album is 11.0.

A lot of people have complained about the recent surge in indie-folk bands. Much of that surge is the result of the massive success of Mumford & Sons, and thus, a lot of indie-folk bands have either been created (i.e. The Lumineers, The Head And The Heart) or have just finally gained some popularity (i.e. The Avett Brothers). Personally, I’ve been a big fan of the movement, folk music has always been a favorite of mine, and I certainly prefer it to a lot of other stuff that’s usually on the radio. But this is the issue that this movement can run into, and it’s exemplified really well on this album, the music can sound generic. Now, this is the point where some people say “Well yea, duh, it all sounds generic”, which I don’t think is necessarily true. I will admit that, for example, Mumford & Sons, do tend to repeat the same song over and over again, but their are plenty of bands within this movement that have their own uniqueness to them. There are some really great moments on this album, the beautifully sung “These Days Are Numbered”, the more upbeat “Shake”, there’s good stuff. But there’s also a fair amount of music on here that is just as generic and uninteresting as it can be. They're not bad songs, they’re just generic and boring. This album is decent, but it could’ve used to have been a bit less generic in spots.
