Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album has a Bayesian average rating of 58.4/100, a mean average of 54.3/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 54.3/100. The standard deviation for this album is 29.0.

Acabou que tá na moda em 2021-2022 pelo resgate dos sons oitentistas e disco.
Signed up to a new label and gaining complete creative control, Mariah goes off the rails (I'm just referring to her music) and creates a record with a cacophonous clash of genres including (but not limited to) piano ballads, synth funk, contemporary R&B & disco-rap, which all come together in a mesmerising fashion. The film was a hot mess (a bit of a guilty pleasure though) but this overwhelming soundtrack is the real deal, ending with the utterly heartbreaking "Twister" (I like to pretend "loverboy" without the guest rappers doesn't exist). Has and always will remain underrated.
edit: can't believe this just reached #1 on the iTunes US charts !!! justice for glitter has been served <3
Honestly, I don't understand the hate. "Glitter" is a chaotic, inconsistent mish-mash of tones and genres, veering between uptempo numbers and ballads... but that's part of its appeal. Mariah proves she can confidently handle disco, funk and hip-hop as well as her usual adult-contemporary fare, and the album as a whole is a successful attempt to capture the essence of the 80s whilst fusing it with current-day sounds. Yes, this isn't the pinnacle of her career, but I reckon the vitriol mostly stems from the negative reaction towards the film and I wish people would just let the music speak for itself, because most of these tracks are pretty damn good.
"Glitter" has been panned by critics since the day it came out, which was unfortunately on 9/11. Mariah does deserve a break, however, because she did have a mental breakdown at the time. The (only) highlights are "Loverboy" and its remix.
