Between Here and Gone, Carpenter's eighth studio album from 2004, was a turning point for Carpenter. Apart from being her last major label album, it was also the first record recorded in Nashville and the first of many with producer Matt Rollings, bringing Carpenter's long partnership with John Jennings to a close. The record starts with the folk-acoustic "What Would You Say to Me" and "Luna's Gone" before panning out as a presentation of Torch-style originals.
This record is the flip-side of Time* Sex* Love*. Both are incredibly mature, but Time* Sex* Love* is full of passion and energy, while Between Here and Gone is tame and zen. It's beautifully produced, but it is almost too somber and slow paced (My favorite review of this record is "Wake me when It's over."). Several listens may be needed before you appreciate the brilliance of "Goodnight America" and the title track. There is only one track that attempts to pick up the tempo, but Beautiful Racket lacks a definitive melody.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
A-Side: What Would You Say to Me
B-Side: Goodnight America
