Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 4% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 76.6/100, a mean average of 76.3/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 76.9/100. The standard deviation for this album is 12.7.

I feel like rock bands follow one of three models. First there is a model where there is more than one creative force but everyone has a well defined role such that there is a clear lead singer and a clear lead guitarist (e.g. Rolling Stones/Led Zeppelin/REM). Second, there are those bands that are really dominated by one artistic force (e.g. Smashing Pumpkins/Replacements). Finally, there are those rare bands that have multiple front men, multiple writers, multiple singers (e.g. Fleetwood Mac, The Beatles). The third formula is rare because its rare to have more than one person who can lead and also because its even rarer if two leaders can get along. I am fascinated by bands that follow the third model and I don't expect them to last. The Jayhawks were one of those bands with Gary Louris and Mark Olson. Eventually Olson left. The Jayhawks still put out great stuff with Louris leading. Olson came back at one point but it was short lived and other Jayhawks have taken turns with a song contribution or two. In any case, TTGG is the peak of the Olson/Louris Jayhawks. It's a magical record and one of my favorite records by any band ever.

I first heard the Jayhawks around the time I first learned that there was a thing called "alt-country." I immediately fell for the brothers-style harmonies of Gary Louris and Mark Olson, as well as the simple roots-rock song structures that define their sound. I especially like them when they really crank up the energy, as on the blistering rocker "Real Light."

This album & Hollywood Town Hall are stellar. Great melodies and harmonies. Americana with a pop flair. Real good MEZ

Jayhawks are a band that more people on this site need to hear. The harmonies of Marc Olson and Gary Louris are as good as you will ever find.
