Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album has a Bayesian average rating of 73.3/100, a mean average of 72.9/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 73.4/100. The standard deviation for this album is 12.4.

This album is stunning to experience and you can really see the progression of the group from their earlier work. It is dark and atmospheric but also gentle and melodic when it needs to be. The album starts off with possibly the groups three best ever tracks all of which are so rich and create a fantastic soundscape for the listener. The rest of the album dips after this but they are all still great songs. The vocal is drastically better than their earlier work and the vocalist seems to have a better control on his voice making for a smoother listen while still keeping hold of that Scottish uniqueness. The drum work is possibly my favourite thing about this album as it is the heart of the record and creates so much tension for us. The music makes an experience for us and the songs match up with each other so well making for an extremely cohesive listen. Overall, this album is so much more consistent than FA&FW with its vocals, instrumental, lyrics and songs in general and the group really smashed it out the park with this release.
If your looking to discover The Twilight Sad start right here , a wonderful collection of songs about lost love and heartbreak
Love the rich Scottish accent and 80's musical vibe
With their fourth album The Twilight Sad provide an intoxicating (irn) brew of shoegaze and goth that is both oppressive and humable in equal measure. The lyrics weave a melancholy tapestry reinforced by melodies that linger at odd intervals. James Alexander Graham's beautiful vocals are backed by a wall of screaming guitars and pounding drums and bass. It was chosen as album of the year by Drowned in Sound and i have to say I agree.
Très bon album , découverte du groupe pour moi. Passe souvent sur ma playlist actuelle..
Fantastic album. Personally, I believe this is stronger than their debut. Fav track: It Never Was The Same
Fantastic collection of new songs from a band who continue to develop and improve their sound. These tracks are growers as you would expect. Only their masterful debut album tops this. Surely more widespread acclaim and success now awaits.
