paladisiac 12/09/2011 17:43Remember the format (and their "dog problems") ? The ringleader behind that group formed fun. and combined his carnival atmosphere with arena pop/rock harmonies a la queen or styx. Track 1 feels like the morning after dog problems, awaking with a slightly-different idea for a band that doesn't fully formulate on waking. The additional vocals don't really work either until track #2, but "benson hedges" brings more energy and catchy structure, but lacks the lyrical chops displayed on track #3 and beyond. That track, "all the pretty girls", is probably the best song former-The Format frontman Nate Reuss has penned yet. The harmonies remind me of late 70s/early 80s pop/rock. Elsewhere, the harmonies, which is the big addition from The Format, are sprinkled throughout. They remind me of roman candle's says pop at times which is ironic in light of there being a track called..."light a roman candle with me". The "na na"'s in "walking the dog" are infectious and the horns and soulful vocals in "barlights" are downright...fun.
