After the international smash hit Mmmbop and the successful Middle of Nowhere album, problems plagued the 2000 follow-up This Time Around. Adolescence served as a temporary inconvenience to the vocal performances, but the following the merger of Mercury Records to Island/Def Jam showed to be much more detrimental. As witnessed in the documentary Strong Enough to Break, the new label had little interest in promoting the new album, leading to lukewarm airplay and chart performances.
But the album itself disapoints after the excellent debut. There really isn't much here that is essential or noteworthy, aside from the excellent pop-rock If Only, the beautiful ballads Save Me and A Song to Sing, and the stupendous title track.
Thankfully the group had the courage to eventually jump ship from the indifferent Island/Def Jam label and went on to make some really good music. But more than twenty years later, This Time Around is still a disappointment.
