"West Texas Waltzes and Dust-Blown Tractor Tunes" is Butch Hancock's first album.

He is a notable member of The Flatlanders, with Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Joe Ely. Hancock is the strongest songwriter, Gilmore is the strongest vocalist and Ely has the strongest stage presence.

Perhaps Hancock's greatest achievement are the four tracks he contributed to Ely's excellent self-titled album: "If I Were a Bluebird," "Tennessee Is Not the State I'm In," "Sucking a Bottle of Gin" and "She Never Spoke Spanish to Me."

West Texas Waltzes will sound like a demo album. It's just Hancock and his vocals and guitar. I think there is an accordion on one track but that is all. It's just Hancock and his songs here, and that is Hancock at his strongest.

Apparently Hancock composed these tunes after dropping out of college and moving back home to help his father on his flatland farm. Apparently the farm stretched for miles, so Hancock would set the tractor in gear and learn the guitar and write his songs as he plowed.

Hancock's voice is reminiscent of Dylan and the content could be pulled out of a Guthrie notebook. But the underlying style is all Hancock.

Track Pick: You've Never Seen Me Cry
Gem: West Texas Waltz
