Quite decent and enjoyable overall compared to most from the era before the golden age. Good fun and energy but it's hard to listen to "abortion" without wincing. Hip hop moved incredibly quickly from mid to late 80s and this album would have had more plaudits had it came out just after the big hit of "the show/la Di da Di" at end of '85 and maybe had some more tracks with Rick on. Instead it came out months later in mid '86 after Raising Hell, thus making it completely old hat. Btw jackbrown, for pioneers of odes to their DJ type songs, check the first Run DMC album (1984). Maybe there were others even before that.
b4 this album there wasn't much in the world of hip hop: Run DMC, Sugarhill Gang, Grandmaster Flash, Kurtis Blow, LL Cool J, Whodini, and that's about it. as for its importance, a close DJ/emcee relationship fueled rap back in the mid-late 80's and it's stressed hard here, b4 Eric B & Rakim, EPMD, Public Enemy, Boogie Down Productions, Kool Moe Dee, Biz Markie, Big Daddy Kane, Kool G Rap, or Heavy D ever wrote odes to their DJ's, Doug E Fresh was boasting the skill of Chill Will and Barry B - the entire point of "Lovin' Every Minute of It" - an old school classic. and yeah, 2 DJ's just cut up this whole album simultaneously the entire time. DJs were the star of the show in the early 80's, that's what ppl went to see. b4 rappers took the spotlight in the 90's and the beat was all made beforehand, there was this perfect middle ground when they'd all be performing and playing off each other. this album is worth it just to see the height of this era.
Oh, My God! wasn't respected much though, and continues to be slept on despite the perfect sampling of the theme music to Phantasm in combination with a great delivery on "Play This Only At Night." they got a lot of s*&^ for sampling the theme of Inspector Gadget on "The Show," but Doug and Slick Rick have so much fun on that track, it's great. you might think it's "whack" as Doug beat boxes through the Inspector Gadget theme, maybe it sounds "dated" to you, but they're just a group of guys having a hell of a lot of fun. this album's the soundtrack to a block party. absolutely kick ass. call it corny, cheesy, w/e, I don't mind being the only person who gets it.
