lethalnezzle 02/27/2013 23:53First and foremost, it's a stunning pop album. I find myself humming some of these songs as much as any. Also, the seamless melding of punk/new wave with soul is a great idea, and gives this album a certain class but also a certain snotiness. And that class and that snotiness work both with and against each other to create a really urgent album that is just so much cleverer than the music a lot of Dexy's peers were coming up with (honestly, I believe this album is tons smarter than The Specials' debut, which I guess is about the closest thing they had to a peer). I just love this album.
I prefer Too-Rye-Aye over this. This album has too much emphasis on the horns, and while Dexys has fantastic horn players, it's not where the emphasis should be.
