Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. Decent 80’s synth album let down by two poor tracks, the highlights being the single releases.
This and The Riddle were two of my favourite albums from the eighties. I have been lucky enough to see Nik Kershaw twice, once in his heyday and more recently about ten years ago. Both were excellent concerts which immediately transformed me back to Human Racing and The Riddle on vinyl. To choose between the two albums is difficult, I think for me that Human Racing has the edge with three cracking tracks, 'I Wont Let the Sun Go Down On Me', 'Wouldn't it be Good' and 'Human Racing'. I still have my original vinyl copies which sound as good today as they did over thirty years ago.
