The highlights are sublime, but as a whole it's way too long and doesn't hold together.
Probably a track or two longer than it needs to be, but it's great nonetheless.
Glam rock sounds pretty good!
Amazing! One great song after another. I had no idea Elton John was doing prog too. Many tasty breezing ballads. Lots of great comping piano rockers. Consistently great all the way, fantastic!
I'm not a huge Elton John fan, but this is a great album.
Now I'm not Elton John's biggest fan, but this is an epic record, one of the first I ever bought. Funeral for a friend is his finest hour, but this is just chock-a-block with great songs. Also, a reminder of what a good lyricist Bernie Taupin is.
Elton became a bit of a caricature later on, but jeeze... this era was brilliant.
A bit long as most doubles but this is Elton John at his best. The beginning always makes me think of A clockwork orange.
I suppose most folks won't go anywhere near an Elton John album and that's too bad because this one is brilliant. Never has John sounded better; and the songwriting is nothing short of fantastic. A classic.
A lot of Elton's finest material; would have made a superior single disc. A lot of filler as well. Still, it doesn't get much better than "Harmony," "Funeral," "Bennie,'" "Alice," and the title track. "Grey Seal" and "Saturday" are pretty wonderful too.
