An absolute masterpiece. Easily the best jazz album I've ever heard, and one of the best period. If you haven't listened to this album, or are choosing not to because jazz isn't really your thing, sit down and listen to it right now.
A jazz pinnacle.
This is probably my favorite jazz album--it's at least top three or so. The liner notes are also among my favorites.
My favorite jazz album. Mingus is one of the finest American composers of any era or genre.
This should get the recognition Kind Of Blue gets, and greater. Best jazz album I've ever listened to.
It just kinda leaves you breathless.
The music on this emotionally intense and haunting jazz masterpiece is a kind of running narrative on the US black experience from the days of slavery to the modern city. This is depicted by the use of instruments simulating human voices - for example, the joyful singing of sax, the sorrowful murmur of trumpet and trombone and the ghostly howls of tuba and baritone sax. The album is a magical combination of orchestral - reminiscent of Duke Ellington, rich melody, hard bop, classical music and flamenco.
Pretty impressive, not easy to digest.
Duet solo dancers is great! Made me laugh, do not know why, but this is fantastic, my favourite jazz album
I first heard this in 1974 when I was a music student, and it really blew me away, the first ten minutes along put it in the realm of the very great jazz albums. I love Mingus' compositions and the talent that he was able to assemble. This could be my favorite jazz album of all time....It moves me so much.
