It's like there a two different bands - pre and post Gabriel departure.
...and Phil Collins had the worst hair on the planet.
Invisible Touch didn't have any filler, so I would say it's a "perfect" album, but not a masterpiece. Probably the best Genesis has done.
"Invisible touch" a masterpiece? Mmm... Interesting point of view. Certainly new to me.
Do you like Phil Collins? I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Christy, take off your robe. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. Sabrina, remove your dress. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Sabrina, why don't you, uh, dance a little. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Christy, get down on your knees so Sabrina can see your asshole. Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. Sabrina, don't just stare at it, eat it. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite.
With Peter Gabriel as frontman, Genesis are in my Top3 bands of all time. Their phase between 1970 and 1975 was just incredibly brilliant.
Genesis get a undeserved harsh press. From 1970 to 1978 they released a fantastic body of material, which contains beautifully evocative melodies that are quintessentially English. They possessed, in all their line-ups, great songwriters which a body of solo work can attest to as well - Phillips, Gabriel, Hackett, Banks, Rutherford, Collins, I salute you all. Although perhaps not the most virtuoso talent, Banks is the best keyboard player of the 70s prog rock greats.
Fantastic band. They released their best material between 1971 (Nursery Cryme) and 1975 (A Trick of the Tail), but there were quite a few good songs during the "pop" area of 1980-1991 as well. The two transitional albums, Wind and Wuthering and ...And Then There Were Three, don't do much for me. I find their prog phase to be far more consistent than the pop era; the peaks of both eras are both very high, but the valleys of the pop era are extremely low.
Peter Gabriel is more edgy and theatrical than Phil Collins, but the latter has a warmer and more pop-friendly voice, so I'd say they're equal.
For the record, I'm more of a prog fan than a pop fan, but I can't deny that Genesis' band of pop was quite good.
Abacab!!!
2nd best band ever. (#1 Pink Floyd). Even after Gabriel (and Hackett) left they made some great albums. Gabriel and Hackett also made great albums after their departure.
Selling England, Trick Of The Tail, Wind & Wuthering And Then There Were Three are all among my favourite albums
