Simply one of the best bands of the last 20 years.
Steven Wilson is an unbelievable songwriter. And I think you will be hard-pressed to find someone who has produced the volume of high class work in the last 15 years that this guy has, spanning Porcupine Tree, solo work, Blackfield, Storm Corrosion. Insurgentes, Stupid Dreams, Fear of a Blank Planet & Deadwing are all masterpieces
What a wonderful modern prog rock band! They're a nice synthesis of alt-rock, prog rock, and prog metal. Great stuff.
I like this band but I think there is no small cause for concern when a band starts out as a joke. There is a lot of inherent gravity to progressive rock but it is always on the verge of self parody. I'm not sure I hear this band really rising above that inauspiciousness... I also find it disconcerting that my wife - not a real music aficionado - exclaims, "it's just heavy enough." I'm still listening, though, and they're an interesting discovery thanks to this site.
Some albums are brilliant - Signify, Fear of a blank planet and Up the Downstair.
The others are just average or below.
Sporadic bursts of brilliance...however, I don't believe that they've created their masterpiece just yet. Stay tuned. These guys are ones to watch.
Seems to be the next big step for progressive rock. My pick would be SIGNIFY.
They've got some masterpieces, but that doesn't cover their flops!
A real candy in the jar of bands that seems overly filled with bland, mediocrity and artificially manufactured 'artists'. These 4 (or 5 if the live guitarist Mr. West needs inclusion) have evolved in many ways from Steven Wilson's one-man project to a coherent band being consistent in putting out high quality albums.
They have arguably the best rock drummer around in their line up. Highly inventive modern drumming can be heard on In Absentia and the following albums.
