Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some artists can have several thousand ratings)
This artist has a Bayesian average rating of 75.7/100, a mean average of 73.1/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 75.8/100. The standard deviation for this artist is 21.6.

I was never a big fan of the entire "Grunge" Movement, but I DID LOVE the Screaming Trees!!! The "Sweet Oblivion album, a combination of what was called grunge and 70s psychedelica, is THE highlight of the 90s sound. Every song brings something memorable to the table, whether it is the Connor brothers thrashing yet melodic guitar freak outs, or Mark Lanegan's whiskey soaked and haunting vocals. "Sweet Oblivion" was Screaming Trees at their peak, yet their previous and later output insures for me the group's place in the Seattle music scene, and in fact Rock and Roll's pantheon of greatest artists of all time. Hyperbole? Put on any of their albums and be prepared to be blown away.
