Kendrick is an artist but seriously, he doesn't get me viscerally like some lesser known rap artists. I'm by no means a hip hop expert. It grates on me as a rule. Lamar doesn't grate on me so much but when you compare his stuff to say Skepta and his grime style of Brit Rap then it falls well short on that visceral level I mentioned above. I know there will be fans of hip hop reading this and if you haven't checked out Konnuchiwa by Skepta then I recommend you do.

Kendrick is the most exciting person in hip-hop today, and one the most innovate in recent history. His ability to merge the sounds of many different and disparate black musics into one sound is incredible. Funk, Jazz, Soul, collide to produce a truly beautiful style. As well, his rapping is incredible both in his talent in rhyming and in creating a powerful and vivid narrative, often painfully drawn from his own experiences. He is the number 1 reason to think that truly meaningful and lasting hip-hop isn't dying out.

One of the best, if not the best contemporary rapper, as Kanye seems to be way too inconsistent to be better than Kendrick at this point. Kendrick has yet to become legendary, but with one or two more great albums, he can become the greatest rapper of all time.

With a classic like GKMC followed by an equally great or better TPAB Kendrick has set in stone his place in history as one of his generations greatest and an all time great. The scary thing is he may not be done. He hasn't failed yet.

In the lineage that extends from James Brown, Marvin Gaye, all the other greats... I consider Kanye a backstep in many ways... but KL is both a culmination and a step up.
