You could be right...the numbers that I looked at were from October 2010, and it was for the US,..so it was very close. Still, I was very surprised that they were still selling so many albums 40 years after their breakup.

i think if an alien or a computer was able to look at all of music objectively and spit out a best band based on whatever factors can be used to judge music objectively, the beatles is the only answer i can imagine coming out. however, when you put subjective tastes into account, there is no way to come up with a "best band", only a personal favorite. in fact, the beatles aren't even in my top ten personally. but i just feel like, objectively, there is no other band that comes close. the beach boys had one record, and the velvet underground, dylan and nick drake had the honor of influencing some really good artists, but no one did it on the scope or level that the beatles did

From Fox John on Sunday 30th May 2010 |

If we're talking about influentialness, one can make a strong case that The Velvet Undergound is as influential as the Beatles, absolutely, but not more so; that's ridiculous! The Velvets heavily influenced certain styles of rock, whereas The Beatles have influenced multiple artists across multiple genres. Now you want to compare consistency of material? That argument is problematic for a couple of reasons-- One: The Beatles recoding career lasted a little over six years. The Velvets lasted almost about the same if you include the post-Lou Reed album (which most purists don't but I'll be generous). The Velvets put out four official albums and two sort of odds and ends albums that came out years later. In about the same period of time, The Beatles released 12 official albums (none of which are horrible imo) and I don't know how many singles and ep's. Keep in mind,in the early years, the Beatles were touring almost constantly, making movies, putting out 2-3 singles and two albums a year(1963-1965) Nobody could do that nowadays! But I digress. If you want to compare recorded output, to be fair, you need to divide The Beatles recorded output (your least favorite albums) by two and then compare the two careers. As great and innovative and influential as The Velvets were, they weren't in the Beatles league in terms of consistency of quality. Two: The Velvets had the luxury of obscurity. No one was paying any attention to them, so they could afford to be more experimental. Whereas, The Beatles were anything but obscure, the world was watching their every move, and they still managed to take chances in the studio and expand not only their musical palette, but rock and pop's musical palette.

I think "The Velvet Underground" did as much for music as "The Beatles" and as far as quality of material from individual tracks to albums, Velvet Underground is better... The Beatles weren't consistent enough for me.. Still one of the greatest bands ever, and one of the most important

well, they weren't the first and whether they're the best is up to you. i don't think they managed to write pop songs as consistently good as michael jackson did. and if you're talking about albums, they're all patchy.

The Beatles are the greatest band ever just as Super Mario Bros. is the greatest video game ever. Sure, there might be things you'd consider to be more fun, and there were even a few things before them, but you truly can't name any other band in history that made more of a revolution. That isn't to say that their music isn't extraordinary, though; they're one of the few artists to do things from all sorts of genres and make them all be equally "magical". When a new band makes the whole music industry turn on it's head again, then that band might just surpass the Beatles. But only then.

From Applerill on Friday 14th May 2010 |

Yes, I does annoy me when people say there won't be a better band than them. It's like they need it to be a concrete fact to feel content with music. And when the artists think it? Well they try not to be better than The Beatles and therefore won't make a band better than them.

From an_outlaw on Friday 14th May 2010 |

The most over-rated band in history. Why so many people have 4,5,or 6 Beatles albums in their top 50 is baffling to me. If you added their entire output together you might manage 1 or 2 albums worthy of the top 100. Please, everyone stop jumping on the "The Beatles are the greatest band there ever will be" bandwagon and think for yourselves.

While personally their music bores me (sorry, just my opinion), I will say this much. I understand why their so influential and I'm thankful for it. Without them most of my favorite bands wouldn't even exist. Do they get my interest? No, but do they get my respect? yes.

If I could choose to be a music artist, I wouldn't even have to think; it's The Beatles - without a doubt. Whereas Dylan, Public Enemy, Nirvana, Oasis, Zep and...well, everyone else really, were limited to certain corners of the music realm, The Beatles did it all - pure avant-garde on 'Revolution 9', electronica-preluding psychedelia on 'Tomorrow Never Knows', progressive rock in the Abbey Road medley. Some works, like 'Come Together' and 'A Day in the Life' resist any real attempt at few-word descriptions. And unlike perhaps every other great musical innovator, such as Zappa or Radiohead, they never fell into the trap of getting too bogged-down in experimentation, fortifying all their clever innovations with an appeal broader than that of any other body of work. Personally I don't think the magic of their 6-year odyssey will ever be replicated

Writing comes easily, and shooting down vague and baseless claims--which you never cleared up--is child's play. Grow up and stop making appeals to authority ("if you go ask the artists"). Here I thought I was arguing against your opinion, not the opinion of others. Next time I'll just talk to the artists. I have my own brain that I choose to use. I implore you to do the same.

My comment was that those bands influenced better bands and their influence was more widespread across several genres, not that they necessarily influenced more bands. I have no interest in counting number of bands someone has influenced and such a thing is not even reasonable to attempt, so any "this band influenced more bands" can never be proven. I'm interested in how varied and widespread over several genres the influence is and the artistic merit of these contributions. Inspiring 100s of pop/rock bands doesn't equal widespread when considering genres. I would say this is true in both cases for Zappa, Eno, and VU. With the Beach Boys and Dylan, I would say their music is better and those they influenced were better, although the widespread over several genres wouldn't apply. Zappa was very influential in everything from satire, to fusion, to most international prog, to noise, to modern classical, to even the Beatles and their attempts at incorporating avant-garde music. VU influenced glam, punk, krautrock, noise, no wave, post-punk, and a lot of experimental and alternative rock, and so on. Eno was very influential in electronic music, art rock, new wave, no wave, and considered to be the pioneer of ambient music. I would say their influence is more widespread than the Beatles on pop/rock. And since I have my opinion on what bands are better (as demonstrated with the Jesus and Mary Chain to Oasis comparison) my argument is valid, because better band is subjective. Telling me Zappa didn't influence better bands goes against the subjective nature of art. I don't mention these names to refute the claim that the Beatles were influential or made great contributions. Here: they were influential and great (although there are bands I think are much greater). I mention these names to refute your claim that there is no debate that they made the greatest contribution. There are other bands/artists who made amazing contributions, like the ones I named. Unless you can definitively measure contribution with a ruler, it can be debated. Unless you can scientifically prove that they did make the greatest contribution then, of course, this can be debated. And if we're considering the artistic merit of these contributions, of course it can be debated. Artistic merit is not objective. Everything can be debated. That's all I'm saying. I like the Beatles, but I do wonder if I would be able to enjoy them more if people didn't shove them down my throat.

I think the problem here lies with personal taste and the way people say The Beatles ARE the best band of all time. It's not a fact, merely an opinion shared by a lot of people who like POPULAR music. I don't think there is any point arguing about it actually, you can't change someones taste in music, just don't think that because they are the most popular band, they are to everyone elses taste, it's just not true! Personally, I do prefer bands primarily influenced by The Velvet Underground, Kraftwerk and Joy Division, but I would never say they ARE the most influential bands of all time, that's just what floats my boat :)

My fingers are getting tired refuting half of your bullticky. Now when you start talking Zappa, one of my absolute heroes you'll get no argument. When you mention Oasis, I can flush them faster than a copy of one of your comments. I love the Beach Boys. I loved them from their first single. When did you discover them? But your comment that the Beach Boys, Zappa, Eno, Dylan, and VU influenced more and better bands hold no water. Just ask all of these bands members. You think Dylan discounts what the Beatles legacy is? Brian Wilson? Not a chance. Because they KNOW Music. The more replies you spew the less I think you actually know. If you look at my top 50 as it stands now I think I have 2 Beatles albums. I'm just picking 2 faves so I can leave room to make my list more diversified. But the fact is, there could be more. You discount power-pop but the term in my mind is the best way to differentiate from what pop music has become. Spears, Aguillera and that vapid ilk. If you listen to most melodic music with a rock basis you're probably getting a decent share of power pop. Make it noisy, make it a ballad, same same. Beatles laid the foundation for a huge part of what is great in music today. To refute this is folly. But keep up the good work.

It's ironic that you mention age when ad hominem, ageist, and possibly anti-Semitic attacks make you look really immature. Let's have a discussion like adults, please. You don't get the concept that some people are not impressed with what they did with the concepts they took from others, nor are they that impressed by their music. Personally, I think the Beach Boys wrote greater melodies and until you prove scientifically that the Beatles wrote better melodies, than that is up for debate, like everything in music. I also think the Beach Boys, Zappa, Eno, Dylan, and VU among others made greater contributions because they inspired better artists and their influence spans more genres. I find all of their music more interesting and I'll take the bands those people inspired and the innovations they made over that of the Beatles any day. Give me Jesus and Mary Chain (Beach Boys + VU) over Oasis anyday. As far as I'm concerned their contributions were greater than the Beatles. Again, this is up for debate, like everything with music, because different people value different things more and less than others. For example, I value jazz-fusion and avant-prog (Zappa), noise rock (VU), more than I do power pop. Moving on...what do you mean, they made the medium? Your arguments are way too vague, and saying it's not for debate is a poor excuse for a cop-out. What medium did they make? No medium/genre/type of music or anything was made by one person. This is not how art works. You are making this up. Be specific about what they exactly made, and I will be specific on where they got it from and what artists were also exploring these ideas before or around the same time as them. I tried to work around your vague arguments and throw out some typical innovations erroneously credited to the Beatles, because you were not being specific. Name some contributions, and I will show you where the Beatles got it from, and the people who really made the contributions.

You guys are a stitch! Especially Rabbi Jewsom. I guess it's your age that precludes you from knowing what you're talking about and that's fine. Musique concrete and eastern influences. Have to laugh at that. You're missing the entire point. But I think that's your MO anyhow. We all are influenced by our experiences and the Beatles are no different. But it's what they did with these that makes them the best that ever was. They made the medium. I'm not making this up. Ask the musicians. Ask Radiohead. Ask Lou Reed. They know which side their bread was buttered on. Unfortunately, most of you don't. So kiddies, keep your heads buried in the sand.. or somewhere else if the mood suits you. Once again. This is not up for debate. The Beatles have made the greatest contribution to music in the 20th century and counting. Oh and Bubbi Jewsom, please don't stop your inane rants as they are fodder for clowns who say the Beatles reputation is based on lies. I mean can you get ANY more asinine than that? Saying that "this is not up to debate" goes against the very nature of art and this website. And Power pop is a stale genre, mate. This isn't the 70s. You've gotta come up with something more impressive than that because, quite frankly, I'm not looking forward to new Weezer album at all. For someone who boasts about their contributions, as if anyone here cares/is not aware of them, you seem to know nothing about their contributions. Saying they didn't follow the crowd is ignoring the fact that a lot of their so-called innovations stemmed from the ideas of others-- Zappa, Dylan, Stockhausen, Beat poets, Shankar, AMM, Buddy Holly, Beach Boys, the Byrds, Yoko Ono, and I could go on and on. Eastern influences, musique concrete, and anything else you want to name did not start with them. They were going along with the manner in which rock music was evolving just as much as they were contributing to that evolution. But at the end of the day, I judge music by how it sounds, not by the legacy/borderline mythology surrounding it.

To see even one comment slighting the Beatles only shows to what level the listener listens. This is not up to debate. The Beatles wrote the greatest slab of tunes in modern times, bar none. The are the foundation on which most power pop stands today. Musicians know this. They basically wrote the manual on how to write melodic songs. Never having to rely on noise and constant pounding or yelled lyrics and following the crowd. They led the crowd. They always will cause ain't nuttin' comin' any better, ever.

Personally I'd take the Stones over the Beatles anyday, they are far more badass. The thing about the Beatles is that they went out when they were still in their prime so they never had a chance to fade away and make bad, cheesy 80's albums like the Stones did. They never stood the test of time, hell they didnt even perfrom for half the time they were together. People often overlook these things and still consider the Beatles to be the greatest band of all time. Don't get me wrong, they definately belong in the top 3, behind Bobby Dylan and the Stones. The only truly aweseome thing to come out of the Beatles besides their slew of fanTASTIC albums is John Lennon. Paul was always a wanker who wrote cheesy love songs on most of their earlier records. John on the other hand wrote Yer Blues. . . All I'm saying is that as innovative and influential as they are, they are not the best.

Great, quirky original songs played by a great group, well sung with fab harmonies/countermelodies, cool guitar/bass/drum parts, tasteful orchestral arrangements and totally wild, off the wall sound FX that don't sound cheesy. Lennon's singing? McCartney's innovative and melodic bass playing? Harrison's foray into different musical cultures? Ringo's superior feel for a song? I know the Beatles naysayers can't deal with it but those pre-recorded loops, distorted vocals, and that up-front drum & bass sound that you hear on "Tomorrow Never Knows" is one of the most influential electronic songs. That's just the start don't forget about how they established British Rock in the states.

it's got to get a tad dreary for the youngsters to keep getting hit over the head from all sides by this sort of consensus avalanche of considered opinion. you can say mcdonald's is the greatest hamburger chain of all time because they sold the most food, but was the food any good and does anybody really talk about the food they're eating when they're having mcdonald's? no. but the fabs are the anti-mcdonalds. they sold the most discs on merit after admitedly being hurled into the stratosphere by a mania that will never be seen again. john lennon said, "we were just a band that made it very, very big." didn't invent ANYTHING. rather, the group synthesized many musical genres, kept the beat strong on almost ALL occasions, experimented when mailing it in would have been fool's gold (magical mystery tour, anyone?) and exited with a huge, smelly, disjointed piece of crap that underneath it all held gems and blasts from the past that tied their history together (let it be, which of course actually came BEFORE the indescribably good abbey road). the sheer quality of the songwriting cannot be brushed aside except by a jaded opinion. a perfect storm of talent, personalities, world events and (YES!) music.

Let's not forget "Helter Skelter" as the first heavy metal track. I've heard it all, but the worse would probably be the claim that the Beatles invented hip-hop, simply because they sampled some audio on a few tracks. If only everyone were as generous when crediting every other musician/band as they are with the Beatles. We could draw a line from almost every form of rock music back to a lot of the bands from the 60s, if we tracked influence Beatlemaniac style.

People tend to be very genorous when guaging the respective influence of The Beatles on all manner of obscure genres. Apparently a bit of reverse tape loop on Tomorrow Never Knows constitutes the first ever drum & bass track for example!

No doubt the greatest rock and roll outfit ever. Their output is second to none and their level of experimentation within the rock format changed the entire music world forever.
