David Bowie is a brave musician willing to take chances and changed music forever. From The Man who Sold the World through Let's Dance he had an incredible run that was fascinating in many ways. Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane, Station to Station and Scary Monsters are my favorites but all worth considering. As a later entry I would recommend Earthling...

In America, David Bowie became well-known - during the early 1970s, after his first British hit - while vitiating Alice Cooper's schtick, (Bowie offered glam rock from an alien while Cooper offered glam rock from a flat-out creep.) Comparisons lingered until Bowie took a turn toward during his "Berlin Period" - artistic pretensions, which allowed him to successfully push beyond glam into the underground, (e.g. "Heroes,") ultimately gave him the credibility to access to the most mainstream of mainstreams (e.g. "Let's Dance.")

If - devoid of blues influence - Van Halen produced the most "American" rock ever put to acetate, David Bowie produced the most "British" rock ever released. No American could credibly release a song like Bowie's "Life on Mars."

Often a critics' darling - and with good reason - Bowie's mind is cut from the same analytical and artistic cloth, many fans have been hoping for an artistic renaissance for decades.

Although Bowie's music has been wildly inconsistent since 1980's "Scary Monsters," the majority of his legacy was secured before then, (ironically, much like his original comparative counterpart who continues to "hang around," Alice Cooper.)

Regardless of the varying quality of Bowie's later work - without a doubt, he created one of the greatest and most varied musical and visual legacies in rock history. "Sound and Vision," indeed.

A multi-faceted genius (and I don't use the word lightly, though the man himself would disagree).

I love him and his american twin Lou Reed beacuse they don't care about "what paeple want to hear from them" and create their own special sound. Heroes is one of the best songs ever 2 me

I understand that Bowie is a huge artist. He broke barriers and pushed creativity throughout the 70s. That said, I still find him inconsistent and overrated.

Other than Beatles and Velvet Underground I can't think of a more influential artist in rock music. I love how Bowie is the 2nd most trusted name in the fashion industry behind Calvin Klein, he can act too. Sublime record collection as well, favs; debut, Stardust, Hunky Dory, Heroes
