Richard Manuel, to me the most beautiful male voice in rock music, tragedy impending from the first moment on. And he was just one fifth of equal talents. Something burned in them, something very dark, reaching out for the light, don't know, if it ever got there, maybe for one moment in "Rags & bones" as a story of the past.

Amazing musicians, pretty much a fundamental part of American popular music. Did everything, turned up everywhere, stayed cool, kept credibility. Even the post-Robertson "Jericho" album is underrated.

Few bands have achieved the critical acclaim of that afforded to the Band. Although four members of the Band were in fact Canadian, they are credited with creating a new genre of white ‘American‘music which, whilst most definitely rock music, is steeped in the history and tradition of America. It is fair to say that with their superb close harmony singing, peerless musicianship (on both electric and traditional instruments) and lyrics that evoke old America in almost every syllable that the Band to some extent ‘invented’ the genre of country/folk rock and gave it credibility.

The Band were no overnight success having served a long and valuable apprenticeship firstly as the backing band to Ronnie Hawkins (The Hawks) and then to Bob Dylan. Their first period with Dylan was during the highly controversial ‘electric’ world tour of 1965 and the group played or recorded with Dylan on and off for another decade. Robbie Robertson was particularly close to Dylan and was a very willing and able pupil becoming the Band’s principle songwriter.

Their first two albums set a standard that they found impossible to maintain and after their third album in 1970 the group appeared to have lost the link to their musical roots becoming just another rock band. Their reputation was to some extent re-established with the release of Northern Lights – Southern Cross in 1975 but this was their last great album and the Band split in 1978. Their legacy is immense and it is rare that such a talented group of musicians come together with the vision to create music that pushed out the boundaries of rock music into new territory.

I implore you to listen to Arcadian Driftwood - Superb in every way

i agree that stage fright is under rated. I also would add it to "the Band" and "Big Pink".

Stage Fright, The Band and Music from Big Pink are really great albums.

The Band did them all amazingly.

I'm surprised how little attention Stage Fright has been given, its got some excellent songs on there.

I don't think Levon Helm would be traumatized by being lumped in with Canadians...
The Band are epic - grossly overlooked in the reputation of the 60s and 70s. They trump CSN and the Byrds, easily. Top playing, top songwriting, top melody.

Well done, Robbie & co.

My favorite band.

They are not all canadians. Levon Helm is from the US, so nationality should be mixed.
