Their debut is timeless. Rocket to Russia is a masterpiece in its own right. It's Alive is pretty amazing. Leave Home and End of the Century are great, and there are great songs on their albums. The self-titled though... it's still fresh.

I'd consider the Clash to be the greatest punk band of all time, but the Ramones are a close second.

Plus, they basically invented punk. For that, we owe them a debt of gratitude.

Is it wrong for me to label the Ramones a singles band? They have wonderful tracks on many albums, but never seem to cohesively put it all together on one. Perhaps their debut meets the criteria. Otherwise, I've really enjoyed Ramones Mania, and stuck with it.

Hey Ho, Let's Go! Punk? Never understood the term when applied to the Ramones. Bubblegum, Pop, Power Pop, Rock & Roll? You pick up a guitar when you're ten/eleven and theres two ways to go. One you go to some overpriced guitar shop who teaches you to play a bunch of waltzes and standards one note at a time. Boring, silly and you lose interest. The other...you pick up some old sh*tty fake strat looking thing, plug it in to some amp with tubes that hum, pick up a poster with a bunch of chords on it and start bashing. The sound lifts you, transports you to a place that makes you just want to kick ass all night long. You tell some buddies and they get an old Sears drum kit and an equally crappy bass guitar. Someone writes down some lyrics about how their life sucks, sneaking a cigarette out of their dads pack, or their second six-pack. You're in your garage with these misfits and a bunch of neighborhood losers show up and identify with the three chords and drum bashing you call music. You get a gig playing in some sh*thole with overflowing toilets on a makeshift stage built by some guy named Tom Verlaine or something and someone takes notice. You travel to a third world toilet to record a record for $6400 and start a revolution.
Ramones.

Yes, start with the "best of" packages. However, once you've bought the compilation albums, you'll definitely want more. For those who crave even more Ramones, make your next purchase their first album. Want even more? TOO TOUGH TO DIE and END OF THE CENTURY are both excellent additions to RAMONES.
