Surely one the best bands ever. Morrison's poetry is incredibly, especially on The End.

One of the first truly "dark" bands in existence, along with The Velvet Underground.

There was definitely no other band like them. They had that rare ability to be experimental while still having pop music sensibilities.

My favourite band of all time. Considering they were writing music the same time as The Beatles I think the difference is huge. Their Music is 10 times more current and sits side by side any modern songs where as the Beatles music in general is totaly dated.

I walked into a shop the other morning singing Changeling to myself. Came out of the shop and Love Her Madly was playing. Consecutive songs on an album (LA Woman) written 44 years ago. Says it all for me.

I don't even need to touch on Jim Morrison worship or hate to value the Doors as a top 5 band. Robby Krieger is an undervalued guitar great, while Ray Manzarek's keyboards are simply incredible. Whether you like his poetry and stage presence or not (I do), Jim Morrison is a great songwriter with a great voice and impressive musical vision.

You could argue about The Doors in some areas, but as a rock band, there hasn't been anything better.

From Willie24 11/09/2013 18:46
After graduating from UCLA in 1964 Jim Morrison met Ray Manzarek, an accomplished classical pianist joined a local band with two of his brothers. Manzarek is impressed by Morrison’s songs and poetry and together they decide to form a band and by 1965 they have recruited Krieger and Densmore and the band is named the Doors.

The make-up of the band is interesting in that there is no bass player with Manzarek playing the bass lines on a separate keyboard. The sound of the Doors was always full and rounded with Morrison’s powerful baritone voice supported by Manzareks swirling organ and Krieger’s precise guitar work. As a unit they were not afraid to innovate, shock and take risks with their music.

Morrison, wild and attractive, was heavily into experimentation with drugs and alcohol and wished to be taken seriously as a poet, writer and performer. He was the driving force behind a band that would become one of the most influential and controversial figures of the late 1960’s. There was no doubt that he was a troubled soul full of demons and contradictions. Through his lyrics, performances and behaviour Morrison continually and dramatically challenged and confronted ‘Middle America’, and was frequently up against the law. This came to a head when he was charged with indecent exposure in Miami, an event which nearly broke the band. In many ways they challenged the values of conservative America in the same way that the Rolling Stones challenged the ‘establishment’ in the UK.

Much to Morrison’s chagrin his good looks and rebellious nature would in fact lead to him becoming famous as a major ‘pop star’ rather than as a serious rock performer, poet and lyricist that he yearned to be. In 1971, having just completed recording an album, Morrison died from a heart attack in Paris and his iconic status was assured. The rest of the band carried on for a short time but soon recognised that Morrison was irreplaceable.

Easily my favorite band from the '60s, even a bit better than the Beatles.
