Though I would like to be original and distinctive and put a personal favorite of mine in the number one spot, it would be ignorant to argue that this masterpiece is not the greatest album of all time. It is hard to find a reason that this album isn't the greatest and it's the only album that is concise enough to do so. With influences and textures that push the boundaries of sonics and theme, this album still manages to stay instantaneous and accessible and has stood the test of time. It is the only album that can both get your grandma singing along to the melody of "good day sunshine" and give you a haunting and extra-terrestrial experience with the vibrations of "Tomorrow Never Knows" not a moment on this album is weak, inane or unneeded. Yet it managed to remain unpredictable, mind-blowing and breath-taking, even after 50 years. [First added to this chart: 03/25/2013]

A totally explosion of euphoria, swagga, self-esteem and passion conducted from the grungy basement of Keith Richard's mansion. Coated with the mud and pessimism of the 70's, this album is the ultimate bow of the 60's dream, flower power is dead, beatlemania had biten the dust and all that is left is the cockroaches and the pain of the scary scenes in Vietnam. Though through the hard times of drug addiction and the passing of Brian Jones, The Stones remain level headed and always ready to caress the neck of a guitar.

This album perhaps is not the most boundary pushing, but for me it is impossible to think of a world without Nirvana. The first time I ever heard rock music was when I asked my drum teacher what it was aged 6. He proceed to play me "Smells Like Teen Spirit" for the first time I heard what you could do with sound, the way you could make a guitar roar and moan so loudly that it could hit you harder than thunder. I heard that you could hit drums so fucking hard that it would make your blood boil. I heard that you could scream and shout so intensely that it would leave an audience shell shocked. After that I became obsessed. Nirvana encapsulates everything about rock, they show that you don't have to be popular or trained to be gifted. They show you that as long as you are yourself and you play like you mean it, someone out there will understand. The best part of it all is unlike most albums in this list, I know for sure I'll still be singing along to the chorus of "Lithium" aged 60 while I clean my denchers. David Bowie's paranoid cocaine fulled years brought with them the ridiculously pompous and audacious "Thin White Duke", an alien character with extreme sexual charm and intense severity. Station to Station managed to perfectly describe the meaning of Rock n' Roll. The title track is a 10 minuet rock symphony consisting of arguably some of the best moments in pop history, bowie's vocals create a passionate energy when singing "It's too late to be hateful". The following guitar solo is powerful in its simplicity. The following track "Golden Years" sounds like a man losing his mind.

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 86.1/100, a mean average of 86.3/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 86.3/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 6.2.

Great chart. Hard to argue with your number one pick. I think Eleanor Rigby and Tomorrow Never Knows are my two favorite songs of all time

Good chart with some albums I also have on my chart. Loving the inclusion of some Kanye West towards the end as well.

I don't know why you rank Nevermind at top, but your other choices are brilliant, especially MLIR at 2.
