The Raveonettes have always had this ability to channel their influences seamlessly, drawing soundscapes that are as catchy and anthemic as they are dark and cynical thinkpieces. To do that is a rare gift–and they occupy a space in my mind that going into my thirties is still as true as it was in my twenties.
In And Out Of Control is Sharin Foo and Sune Rose Wagner at the peak of their powers. After nine years of producing raw indie pop with nods back to the brill building girl groups the duo was on the cusp of creating something truly unique and impactful. Foregoing the rawer production of their early records, Foo and Rose Wagner are joined with recording engineer Thomas Troelsen to create something much more immaculate and high fidelity. Many fans of the Raveonettes that I know don’t care for this move and call it a swing in the wrong direction. They are wrong. Absolutely, completely wrong.
If I was bold I would say In and Out of Control is the successor to The Velvet Underground & Nico, sharing the same intangible aspects of the 1967 classic with a dreamy, noise pop foreground in place of the 60’s psychedelia. It’s so apparent in the songwriting, as Rose Wagner creates stories of drug addiction, loss, sexual assault, obsession and death to the beat of cheery noise pop with girl group-esque harmonies from Foo. They are incredibly danceable until you catch yourself actually hearing what the songwriting is depicting and stop and think before you go right back to dancing and vibing along.
The duo would continue writing records with this same design, though none would be as good.
But how can you meet perfection? [First added to this chart: 07/09/2013]

Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)
This chart is rated in the top 2% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 90.6/100, a mean average of 91.2/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 91.0/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 8.9.

great chart. love too Scarecrow on another chart!
Really interesting chart. Like it a lot
This chart strikes me as young, fast, and scientific. Awesome-o!
fun chart. Love your Motown inclusions!
Have a happy birthday.
I looked through it and it was very good. Some classics and some new stuff. Great
Nice selection and good effort on adding text.
Revisited this and it's fantastic. Great chart Gowi. I'm glad you got rid of the "one album per artist" rule in favor of honesty, though I do think that having an equal distribution of albums per decade sort of pigeonholes you. Either way, there's around 60 amazing albums here and 40 which should immediately go onto my wishlist.
Descriptions are what make or break a chart and you're are very intriguing! Great Chart!
