The Perfect Collection 1 of 3 by NickVolos

This chart is based on the book "The Perfect Collection" by Tom Hibbert. The book was published in 1982, so the albums included in the book are up to that date. It contains a list of 200 albums but because the author in many cases chooses two albums for an artist, it comes up to a total of 226 albums

I have used this book before the days of internet as a guide. As time allows, I will make an attempt to copy the author's comments under each selection.

The albums in the book are listed in nine chronological sections as follows:

1: PRE-SIXTIES/PRE-POP
Selections 1 through 18 (chart 1 of 3)

2: THE SIXTIES: PRE-BEAT, MOTOWN AND SOUL
Selections 19 through 40

3: MID-SIXTIES/UK
Selections 41 through 59

4: MID-SIXTIES/US
Selections 60 through 84

5: LATE-SIXTIES/UK
Selections 85 through 103 (chart 2 of 3)

6: LATE-SIXTIES/US
Selections 104 through 132

7: THE SEVENTIES/UK
Selections 133 through 156

8: THE SEVENTIES/US
Selections 157 through 196

9: PUNK AND THE EIGHTIES
Selections 197 through 226 (chart 3 of 3)

"Next to nothing is known about the great Robert Johnson. No picture survives. But what we know is that during the thirties, he cut some thirty-odd songs which are among the most harrowing and darkest blues ever recorded. His influence, which extended down to Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton, was immense" - P.H. [First added to this chart: 10/29/2013]

"It's pathetic, really, that since Williams popped off in the back of a car on New Years Day 1953, no-one has taken country music any further. It says much about the form that its greatest ever exponent should have been a drunken, drug-oriented, neurotic, helpless sociopath, bent on self-destruction. His emotive nasal whine lives on and makes the mawkish crooning of (nearly) all the rest seem futile." - Ed.

"The first true pop star. Music to herd cows by." - P.P.

"The man who started it all. Without Hank's uncanny honesty and uninhibited delivery, inspiration for future performers would have been severely curtailed." - M.M.

"His plaintive voice and achingly lonely songs are the foundation for all that's best in C&W, through Waylon Jennings, Gram Parsons and Elvis Costello. William's songs were probably the nearest a white man ever came to singing the blues. A vital influence on Bob Dylan and Van Morrison to name but two of his hundreds of disciples." -P.H.

"The rock 'n' roll album. Quintessential Elvis, before 'Colonel' Parker, the Army and Las Vegas sunk their claws in. Raw and threatening, cajoling and tender, as you hear Elvis single-handedly invent rock 'n' roll. Timeless and essential, the music still sounds as powerful today as it did over a quarter of century ago." - P.H.

"Musically, if not culturally, as influential as Elvis Presley. If Berry received a cent each time a guitarist ripped of his patterns, he'd be an even richer property owner than he is. An observer, a wit, a king guitarist and the writer of 'The Promised Land' which just about says it all." - Ed. [First added to this chart: 10/29/2013]

A great book which I used in conjunction with the NME encyclopaedia of rock when I first started getting serious about music. I love the way Hibbert justifies some of his choices by saying you need some of the worst albums ever made as well, to have the "perfect collection".

Very interesting. And it does show that for the early days you need to include lots of compilations. The art of producing an entire LP of (worthwhile) songs had not been created.

Yep, this is a perfect collection. Hibbert nails the music of this era exactly. I even like his eccentric little personal picks that are more apparent when you see the whole 226. Classy!
