Top 100 Greatest Music Albums by pinkfreud1981 Unknown

This is a list of my favorite albums. I'm not including classical music or hip hop, the latter because I haven't listened to enough, and the former because I need a list specifically for classical. I tried to do the one album per band thing, but I just couldn't . There are some masterpieces that I can´t leave out even if I have to sacrifice some variety.

An album that moves me every time you listen to it. An album that has it all in my opinion, a deep and relevant concept, a portrait of the predatory system we live in (credits to Mr. Orwell, of course) an album full of dark poetry with keyboards that create a gloomy and hypnotic atmosphere that surrounds everything. Gilmour's guitars seem to me especially deep and melancholic on this one. Someone could say that Wish You Were Here has better worked melodies and that Dark Side is more innovative and more diverse in its instrumentation, but for me there is something here, perhaps the beligerance, I don´t know, but it has a dark and beautiful feeling that makes it a little (very little) above other Pink Floyd masterpieces. This album blew my mind when I listened to it. At a time when I thought rock had left its best years behind and there were no bands on the level of Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin, this album proved me wrong, and not only made me discover Radiohead but also made me realize that there was still great rock out there. Ok Computer: A masterpiece from start to finish. Its title and concept not only marks Radiohead's entry into electronic music, but it also marks a milestone, it welcomes a new society where we are no longer anyone without our computer and our digital identity. Brings together all the best of one of the most talented hard rock bands in history: their blues rock, their more Celtic and folk elements, plus, of course, their symphonic arrangements ( Kasmir, what a materpiece!) Physical Graffiti is a collection of songs that would make any band proud, an album that could easily be mistaken a greatest hits record. I have no doubt that it is one of the greatest achievements in the history of rock. [First added to this chart: 03/10/2011]

Completely original. It should almost be considered a genre in itself. It's like meditating deeply, like delving into the unconscious mind: At times it is heavy and dense and at times it is beautiful and almost ethereal. Jazz, progressive rock, chamber music: A masterpiece from beginning to end. [First added to this chart: 11/25/2012]

The subtlety and complexity of the instrumentation (with celesta, harp, percussion loops, choirs and strings) and the way it complements the beautiful melodies is unparalleled. A wonderful expression of love from Bjórk. A great aesthetic experience. [First added to this chart: 02/01/2023]

Listening to this is a special experience. The first two times I tried it, I admit that it bored me a little, but suddenly it clicked and now I understood what a great work of art it is. I agree with those who describe it as an album about the end of the world, with the desolate and tragic aspects, but also with the inherent beauty of every ending, with the inevitable melancholy of our fading spirit, with that magic that happens when the human spirit touches nothingness. An ambitious and energetic album. Progressive metal? I think so. I especially like it because I feel it's a very emotionally and intellectually satisfying album. It surprises and moves me. Songs like Parabola are true works of art that transcend rock. [First added to this chart: 12/20/2019]

Musically it is an absolute genius. No matter if you like progressive rock you have to give Close to The Edge a chance. Full of melodic and rhythmic creativity, the textures are quite special too, and they really create a sound landscape thay completely surrounds you. An album that never ceases to amaze no matter how many times you listen to it. It is a perfect album. It makes me want to applaud when I finish listening to it. This brilliant work combines the free spirit of jazz, its creativity and irreverence with the complexity and textures of classical music, ,plus some elemenst of Flamenco. An album that never wears out, every time you listen to it you find something new to enjoy. [First added to this chart: 02/01/2023]

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 87.1/100, a mean average of 86.5/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 87.3/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 10.3.

Fantastic chart and with 33 albums in common I tend to agree with most of the picks. Particularly love seeing 5 albums from Sigur Ros in particular.

gran lista amigo, me fascina ver tu amor por bandas como Yes ó Sigur Rós, pero lo que más me agradó fue ver a Thick a Brick tan alto en la lista, uno de mis discos favoritos de todos los tiempos

You commented on my chart so now I'm looking back to yours to see how much we truly did overlap.

All I can say is I know I'll be using your rankings for a while to find new music, starting with the Thick as a Brick.
