While The Strokes sided with the North-American punk tradition in the '00s punk/new wave revival, Interpol came to be the most representative band of the gloomy British side of the thing, even being from the yankee-est of the cities. And they turned the game once again: the downbeat bass lines and discreet synths backing the pessimistic, nihilistic lyrical deepness that distinguished Wire, The Cure and especially Joy Division prooved better than the iconoclastic yet aimless energy of simple crude punk. Paul Banks, in his music and poetry, captured peerlessly the zeitgeist of the 2000s. [First added to this chart: 01/04/2014]

Is it the complex arranges? Or maybe the epic lyrical themes? What is it that make this record so unprecedentedly striking? When I first heard it, I barely understanded English and was as touched as ever so we can strike that second one. And considering I'm not U2's biggest fan, i don't think it's the ambitious music either. Well, I put it to the sincerity of it. Win Butler's screamy choruses are universally cathartic, unstoppable shouts of youth with which every 12- or 13-years-old tortured soul would identify. Only later I would pay attention to what he was actually saying and what that all meant and that added a considerable lot to the thing, but the initial blast of emotions that it provokes is incomparable. After the perfection of 'OK Computer', it was clear to pretty much everyone that Radiohead were (and are) one of the greatest bands in this world, but certainly no one was expecting them to completely throw out their previous efforts and start from scratch. Drawing inspiration from jazzistic experimentalism and krautrock, they created an entirely new sound that can be described only as out of this world. No surprises a variety of conspiracy theories emerged affirming that Thom Yorke is a kind of alien or supernatural being and that somehow this record foresaw 9/11 and shit like that -- in fact, I'm not totally sure those are completely unrealistic.
Also, 'How to Disappear Completely' is probably the most expressive song ever put on record.

When I picture Noah Lennox isolated from the world by towers of sound-engineering machines, cropping a bit from every part of music history and producing this remarkably beautiful piece of heaven, I can't help but remember of Brian May insisting on putting "...and nobody played synthesizer" on the sleeve of Queen's debut. Well, Noah sure played it to create all his intricate web of sound, to the benefit of us all. And, although Queen and the rock purists that still despise all of electronic music didn't, few of them gained place in this chart. Because, for the sake of real artists, fuck purism. I really enjoy both the albums you've listed here and the comments you've written about them. I especially love Funeral (I know everyone does, but it's for good reason), Illinois, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, and Sound of Silver, among many of your other selections. I'm also intrigued by your inclusion of Voodoo in your top ten for the decade, as D'Angelo is an artist who, I think, deserves more love. Excellent chart!
