Natalie Portman didn't lie: my life was definitely changed by The Shins. While it lacks a little in consistency, the 'lows' are still high and that makes the highs even higher. MF DOOM's flow is so sick, I'd be the best rapper in the state right now if I had a tenth of his skills. They're on full display here with the cartoony backing and short song-lengths accentuating his rapid-fire rhymes, and seriously, some of the lines just make my head spin. This one, as soon as I heard it, slid right under Madvillainy as my favorite hip-hop album ever. El-P's beats and the atmosphere he creates on this record do so much to set the mood for this almost dystopian album, and the lyrics are definitely no slouch either. It's THE indie darling album, yes, but it's like that for a reason. The instrumentation? Fantastic in its lo-fi glory (those horns!). The vocals? Probably the most fun record I'll ever hear. It doesn't matter how many samples they used on this album, this sound can only be theirs.
