Top 100 Greatest Music Albums by TheHolyKiwi

I'd just like to point out as of September 2018 this chart is outdated, I also don't use this site anymore as I don't appreciate the community at all anymore. I've moved over to RYM and you can find me @ https://rateyourmusic.com/~Lythelus

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please don't attack my chart, it's my opinion and hopefully should be respected, thank you! :)
In retrospect, why hate? Ask yourself this question. Do you gain anything from it?

I come back every so often to add/remove albums and sort out the chart's placings, so I can't say it's ever rock solid.
At this current point in time 05/02/2018, it's a solid as it will be for the subsequent upcoming months.

I've added genres to every album on the list, I saw other members doing it and it looked nice, so I thought I'd try it! I also state Key Tracks, these point out what I feel is the most important track of the album while also reflecting my favorite in personal taste.

I have a rule and more of a custom to follow to not have more than one album per artist! I really prefer to only stick with one album per artist because it it allows for a lot more diversity and I listen to a LOT of albums.

If you're going to complain about the rule above, think again, I'm a music connoisseur, I listen to too much music to repeat a ridiculous amount of the same artist, I would NOT be HONEST with myself if I did that. The less artist repeats, the more honest this chart would actually be. I am constantly looking for spaces from artists that I love but can't fit in the chart. So think again, do not bitch about it and do not say it is dishonest. This chart is full 100% honesty. I just can't contemplate why I would flood the chart with multiples from the same artist, it doesn't make sense.

Well what are you waiting for!? Go ahead and read away! Hopefully I introduce some new underrated albums that you can give a listen!

As far as my taste in music is considered, Radiohead has ALWAYS been one of my favorite bands, ever since I had a conscious about musical taste. It was never influenced by the love for them on this site, that is just a coincedence. Every album I end up listening to, I always look back on how it relates to OK Computer, that is how much this album has an effect on me. Every track on here is incredible, containing some of the best song-writing ever, impressing me upon every listen, even after such a ridiculous time length. When I first listened to this album it was back around 2006 when my brother recommended me to the band after listening to hits like "Creep", after some research I decided to buy this CD, my god how much it was worth it. My jaw was literally drooped the entire running time, and when listening to Paranoid Android for the first time... stupefying, just completely astonished at the exceptionality this album provided to the world of music. Not only did this leave a major impact on me personally, but music in the world as awhole, incredible. Subsequently advanced at the time, a masterpiece in every which way and a ballad of perfect songs. Radiohead still, even today, proves that they are not a force to reckon with and are constantly thriving to outdo themselves, rarely and band comes across as this important in the realm of the medium we know as music and OK Computer even after so much quality stands tall at the top, conveying an utmost importance and influence that reigns over everything else within it’s genre constraints since it’s release. I can say it again, a *fucking* mastapeece.

What can I say? Was Slint's Spiderland the beginning of what we can appreciate as the post-rock genre it is today? Is this that type of record? I don't know quite where to start on the analysis of this album. It's one of those post-rock efforts that keep the emotional connection extremely powerful to the listener, it doesn't fault within a second in this aspect through it's incredibly haunting vocals and lyrics. Instrumentally, the tip-toeing guitar lines, simplicity-feigning complexity, while the sparse, almost tangible sharpness of the album's production harkens back to the days of art rock saturated punk. The pulsing, pounding, endlessly fascinating rhythms hint at an appreciation of underground math scenes, and blistering fuzz trails ground the album amongst its contemporaries in the burgeoning grunge, shoegaze, and post-hardcore scenes. Despite the apparent feeds of influence, never let anyone tell you they've found an album that sounds "kind of like Spiderland." No. This is one of those rare albums that creates for the listener a world so unique that it will never be replicated. A timeless classic.

Doom metal • stoner metal

Establishing themselves as one of the heaviest bands to ever exist, Electric Wizard unleashed their 1997 album Come My Fanatics... upon the world. It marked a turning point for the genre, where the sound was even more abrasive, darker, hate-fuelled and distortion clouded the noise in a level of pummeling heavieness. Electric Wizard followed up this genre classic with what could arguably be called the greatest doom release ever made— Dopethrone. A record where only pessimism, narcissism existed and where the sky was clouded in the smoke of every bong releasing it’s ethereal darkness, a darkness conjured by no other than lucifer. Dopethrone is crushingly heavy, listening to the record feels like a monster has possessed your speakers or headphones and was pouring impending doom through the signal. The doomy riffs ooze an atmosphere you would never hear anywhere else and before you realise it, you’re engulfed by the record, to be stomped on and torned into pieces until you’re left with nothing but astonishment across your face. This is quite simply, the heaviest album, ever fucking made...
...and Electric Wizard sure makes most other metal bands sound like a bunch of pussies.

In all conversations that seem to arise when discussing Opeth, opinions seem to be reflected, mirrored, complete opposites. People come from different directions with their subjective interpretations of the work in front of them. I know people who despise this record and Opeth in general and then others like myself who believe Opeth are something entirely special and unique. Over-produced? Maybe in terms of tunnel-vision focusing on what you dislike about the record, but Opeth uses this production to the greatest of constraints, this is one of the grandest records to ever be recorded. Every single second of recording is immaculate to the point of precision to which stuns me upon every listen. Blackwater Park is massive, emotively and physically. The beauty behind Akerfeldt's pure, distinctive vocal style that emphasizes juxtaposition, the absolute wretched, deathly and most gruesome growls in the genre paralleled to baritone vocals to the caliber of an angel. Akerfeldt is possibly the greatest thing prog has had to offer in terms of vocals, I can't seem to find a vocalist on his level for that matter. But, not only does Opeth excel in the vocal department, their technical proficiency within their instruments and playing is not something seen in most music and definitely not something to be slept upon. It's incredibly technical no doubt about that - with several tracks mixing, twisting multiple guitar tracks and riffs over each-other throughout the duration of a single song - but the key is, it never comes across as "hammy" or "fake" everything here packs a huge punch. A huge reminder that the astonishing production ties in with this instrumental to create a wall of sound of pristine value, something that sounds incredibly ear-pleasing. I can completely understand if Opeth are not your type of band or even type of genre, but if you're a fan of technical, heavy music, Opeth are a must-listen. In retrospect, Blackwater Park seems to carry the most weight in their discography, it's their towering monument and is perfection in the form of a musical record.

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 1% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 91.4/100, a mean average of 90.9/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 91.9/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 10.5.

Bonus points for honesty, something you don’t see enough on this site. But it would really be great to see some genres that aren’t metal, or at least some more picks that aren’t guitar oriented. I see you have Art Angels on here, why not try St. Vincent’s Strange Mercy.

Though I've gotta say there's a little too much emphasis on progressive metal at the expense of pre-90s stuff I dig this chart. Love the lengthy write-ups - bit random though that you stole Pitchfork's one for Doolittle in their list of best albums of the 80s? Stick to your own writing man you've clearly got the passion for it :)
