You BEAutiful People! Top Recs From Other Members by Jimmy Dread

i doubt I would have discovered any of these wonderful records without BEA. Bless up.

I get some lovely comments every now and then from people who have ended up discovering, listening to and loving a record I've featured, mentioned or name-dropped their way. Well, it's time to repay the kudos. Below is a list of albums discovered thanks to members on this site (naturally in order of preference), along with those amazing souls who put me in touch with it in the first place.

It's been a little dry for updates of late as I've been off on my own musical voyage away from the good ship BEA (plus plug.dj - previously the best source of finding out about some of these - seems to have bitten the dust), but since this chart was conceived and first compiled I've managed to pick up about 80-85 of these to expand the record collection. So thanks all for making my wallet a little lighter over the years, and here's to the next discovery (whenever that may be).... Jimmy, January 2021

Via Meccalecca. An absolute revelation, one that very soon after first listen to this (thanks to Mr. Leather dropping a track from it in Plug many moons ago) turned into an obsession. Absolutely, totally adore this - one of my favourite ever compys, and contains perhaps one of my top 10 all-time tracks in "When The Going Is Smooth And Good". Jonny, you're a ledge. Best thing I've ever found thanks to all my years with BEA, and that's saying something... [First added to this chart: 10/24/2014]

TOP 100! Via arthurbittencourt. A user I've never heard of, but upon seeing his had been made Chart Of The Day I decided to check out some of the entries (as I occasionally do, assuming that said charts aren't awash with the same old shit). Turns out loads of people love this (including me now). I'd never heard of it, let alone heard it. Now I can’t imagine life without it. [First added to this chart: 10/06/2017]

TOP 100! Via Brun027. Another stellar rec from meu bom amigo. Strangely enough I actually had Tinindo Tricando on a cracking Soul Jazz MPB compilation, but never thought to check out the album in full (although I did with Jaime & Nair, which I also love). A gorgeous record that sits nicely next to Jorge Ben on my virtual record rack. [First added to this chart: 09/24/2014]

TOP 100! Via 'Mindmovie' (or whatever name Borve's going by these days). This was on one of those threads where you recommend an album and someone picks one from your chart, etc. etc. Anyway, don't know why I picked this from MM's chart, but so glad I did. Cosmic Gallic psych par excellance - and now firmly established in my All-Time 100. [First added to this chart: 09/24/2014]

TOP 100! Via Revolver. I don't think Revolver was overly happy that I didn't roll over backwards when he played a Beirut track the other night, but when he dropped "Sick Beat" I had to find out more. My God, this record is TERRIFIC! A bilingual bubblegum banquet, and a dizzy infantile dancehall treat of seismic proportions although it more than likely cost no more than £25.12 to make. I've now had the pleasure of seeing them live too - and they were even better than I could have hoped for (plus the gig was free too). I 100% adore this record - one of the best I've heard in a very long time. [First added to this chart: 11/22/2014]

TOP 100! via dividesbyzero. Oh Gabe, this album is stellar. Interesting back story to Ranking Dread - he was a yardie who ended up on the UK's Most Wanted list. Not that it matters, as this set is hard as nails - one side mixed by Tubby, one by Scientist, Sly & Robbie & Roots Radics 'pon di riddim... as close to a dream team as any dub LP could hope to muster. Via Brun027. Bruno's one-time overall No.1 album contains, in it's opening track, the song which my iTunes is telling me I've listened to more than any other. I've been going through a pretty lengthy MPB phase of late, and his chart is a constant treasure trove of recs. [First added to this chart: 09/24/2014]

Via Meccalecca. I'm sure I'd spotted this album in a P4k review a while back (assume it's been re-issued), but had never given it a listen until Mr. Leather dropped Blue Crystal Fire in plug one night. A total revelation which I can't believe had passed me by for so long. Now holds extra resonance after listening to it en route to the hospice just before my Mum passed away. Hauntingly beautiful. Via BrandonMiaow. Ever since our first forum conversation (which involved me talking about seeing Vashti Bunyan live at a venue 20 minutes from my house) I've always had a soft spot for Brandon's chart - and his championing of Cross Paths further endeared him to me. His music taste's totally spot on, and whilst I LOATHE the cover art to Visions (normally enough to stop me listening to any album) it grows with me on each listen, which tends to be whilst stuck on the M25. Via Satie. Satie's got the most amazing, diverse taste - and when someone drops a reggae rec my way and you end up loving it to bits you know you've bumped into someone whose charts are rife with new listening experiences. What shocked me more was that given my love of Wackies (Horace Andy's Dancehall Style, Wayne Jarrett's Bubble Up) I'd never come across this album before. In actual fact, it's better than both the aforementioned. Satie, a pint's yours if you ever cross the pond. [First added to this chart: 09/24/2014]

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 1% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 94.8/100, a mean average of 96.6/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 97.2/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 6.4.

Not sure if you were the first to come up with this idea but it doesn't matter; this chart is everything I love about the online music community summed up in 100 albums.

A very nice surprise seeing your chart! You've given me lots of new artists to hear. Thank you for that. It's a great idea, as well, making a chart celebrating the friends on BEA that exposed you to the new music. Saved your chart as a Fave.
