Top 100 Greatest Music Albums by
noWaxJim (2013)
AKA 100 LPs to Save When the World Caves In, or at least the 100 I currently have with me in my pocket squashed onto my iPhone (and hence carry everywhere). Inspired in equal parts by John Peel, my mother, countless friends I've met over the years and music magazines/internet sites. My chart is hardly definitive (strictly one album per act, no compilations - which is a pain in the arse as this means Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, The Vaselines and Talulah Gosh unfortunately get the boot), and by no means representative of 'the greatest' albums per se, but certainly indicitive of the LPs that mean the most to me right now. Think of me as an anorak-clad indie-popper with dreadlocks, buffalo sandals, ripped jeans and a set of glowsticks and you'd get some sort of idea of not only my musical tastes, but why I now let my wife choose my wardrobe. And if like some you think this chart is a little too diverse for it's own good... seriously, live a little, try new things, get out more and stop listening to Dad Rock (apart from Crosby, Stills and Nash). Constantly on the hunt for something new to make my soul sing, so if you think you can help, drop me a line... Jimmy, May 2013.

6. (3) ![]() | Bizarro | The Wedding Present
| PICK - Granadaland; FIRST HEARD: The Rock Box, Camberley (thanks to Peter). A glorious, gut-wreching racket, the true sound of a heart snapping in two and being grinded into dust. The best album to come from 'oop North' without doubt, pilgrimmage to Leeds notwithstanding. | |||||||||||||||||||||

| PICK - I Don't Owe You Anything; FIRST HEARD: Age 14. The LP that helped me through GCSE revision, made me feel I wasn't on my own, made me proud to be a swot, made my spots and lack of girlfriend seem like they didn't matter and literally saved my adolescence. I'm eternally grateful. | |||||||||||||||||||||

20. (=)![]() | Grotesque (After The Gramme) | The Fall
| PICK - A New Face In Hell; FIRST HEARD: Play It Again, Aldershot (although Peel may have had a hand in persuading me). A total revelation, which didn't really hit home until my Mum said she loathed them and I gained an English Lit. degree. Never can decide if Hex or Grotesque deserves this spot - I love them both equally. Come back next week and check which one's currently annoying the wife most, when most likely a sudden surge in popularity (mine) will see Room To Live usurp the pair of 'em. Or maybe not - have you heard Papal Visit? Advice = don't. | |||||||||||||||||||||

28. (30) ![]() | Surfer Rosa | Pixies
| PICK - Broken Face. FIRST HEARD: Peter's flat, Farnham. My old band mate had a poster of the slightly risque cover sitting in his digs, and everytime I see a Spanish flamenco dancer with her knockers out I am reminded of this. My fave Pixies album - they sound at home with Albini. | |||||||||||||||||||||

29. (27) ![]() | The Stone Roses | The Stone Roses
| PICK - I Am The Resurrection; FIRST HEARD: Xmas present @ 16 years old. Bless Ma and Pa, they always knew what I wanted. The one band you would NEVER want to reform - one amazing LP, one dud, tons of awful live performances. They'd never capture the magic again. What's that you say... that HAVE reformed. Bugger. | |||||||||||||||||||||

35. (34) ![]() | Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables | Dead Kennedys
| PICK - Kill The Poor; FIRST HEARD: Spinnadisc, Aldershot. The first of many a scratched LP purchased from the now-defunct second hand record emporium that more closely resembled a charity shop (and smelt like one too!) than a purveyor of life-affirming musicality. It had a sink in the corner, by the Big Band section. | |||||||||||||||||||||

37. (42) ![]() | Murmur | R.E.M.
| PICK - Laughing; FIRST HEARD: Sound Barrier, Guildford (RIP). Another product of my Saturday job in Debenhams. Every Saturday lunchtime was spent hogging their in-store CD player, and always resulted in a purchase. Extra marks as I know a lot of people who like REM but never went further back than Green. Fools. | |||||||||||||||||||||

43. (39) ![]() | Colossal Youth | Young Marble Giants
| PICK - Wurlitzer Jukebox; FIRST HEARD: c.2007 in Sister Ray (formerly Selectadisc), Soho. Still have no idea why I bought it, and partly annoyed with them as it's thanks to YMG that we have to endure the loathesome XX. Only Vic Godard made a synthetic ping-pong ball sound so dolorous. | |||||||||||||||||||||

70. (=)![]() | Technique | New Order
| PICK - Vanishing Point; FIRST HEARD: via BBC1's "Making Out", a drama featuring Margi Clarke. I loved New Order before this came on the telly, but I remember watching this every week just because I fell in love with the closing credits music (the aforementioned Vanishing Point). Bought in Play It Again records, Aldershot... the only copy they had was in the window, hence my copy has a rather faded cover and a big mark where the price sticker had been. | |||||||||||||||||||||

75. (76) ![]() | Closer | Joy Division
| PICK - Colony; FIRST HEARD: via New Order fixation. Closer often pops in and out of my chart, more from admiration of the parts (vocals, lyrics, PRODUCTION) rather than the complete article, which to me has always represented a miserable kid stuck in his bedroom on his 18th birthday whilst his mate from work got off with the girl he'd fancied for ages. Luckily recent events have seen that lad look in the mirror and realise quite how lovely it all turned out in the end, so with the demons exorcised I can once again dip into this Mancunian masterpiece without fear that I'll burst into tears at the slightest thought of past events. | |||||||||||||||||||||

Oh wow this chart is really fantastic. Love the diversity.
Great list, you absolutely put a lot of work into the list. Plus any list that includes Loveless makes me smile
Your notes are really impressive. This melodic-harmonic triumvirate may be complemented by The House of Love - Fontana Album, 1990. Many more try to follow, proving a primary role of these mentioned. I tried to show such a time sequence in the field of orchestral, polyphonic approach. Pet sounds stands first, then comes Sgt. Pepper, two decades passing - The soft bulletin and Illinoise.
Not exactly my tastes. Been trying to listen to 3 out of your top 4 for the last few years - i.e. Pet Sounds, Loveless and the Ramones and cant get into any of the 3 and just dont know if I like their sound & style. Still I have not given up and in all fairness only listened to bits of them. There is just so music to listen to and so little years left one has to prioritize. If there is a heaven I wonder will we get to properly listen to 'everything' one day. Surely we will, if we make it that is :)
Still one of my favorites on the site, the only chart I've seen with Tomboy in the top 10, I respect the hell out of that.
Interesting chart. Lot of different albums which I have not heard. Enjoy the stories behind each album
Not only is the album selection crazy various and really awesome (there's lots that I haven't heard of), you writing about your first listen on every album is amazing. I don't know if I could remember all that. Clearly every single album on this chart is extremely personal, and that's fantastic. Great chart.
looks ordinary at the first
but actually very very epic chart, I like it
@AMS - interesting point about MPP. I would say given the simplicity you allude to re. Loveless then Panda Bear's Tomboy would be a more natural step. Being a huge Animal Collective fan (seeing them for the 7th time at Field Day in 10 days) I adore MPP, but as Strawberry Jam was the first album of theirs I truly loved, coupled with Noah Lennox's Brain Wilson-esque sense of harmony and melody, Tomboy joins Loveless and Pet Sounds in my all-time triumphant triumvirate.
Distinctive chart. Melodic themes of Loveless are simple songs, as Kevin Shields said, the comparison is mbv, in his own words, impressionistic approach. In this context Pet sounds and Loveless linked together form a sequence - different standards of expression in different decades. The next step is Merriweather Post Pavilion.
