Top 100 Greatest Music Albums by noWaxJim (2013)

AKA 100 LPs to Save When the World Caves In, or at least the 100 I currently have with me in my pocket squashed onto my iPhone (and hence carry everywhere). Inspired in equal parts by John Peel, my mother, countless friends I've met over the years and music magazines/internet sites. My chart is hardly definitive (strictly one album per act, no compilations - which is a pain in the arse as this means Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, The Vaselines and Talulah Gosh unfortunately get the boot), and by no means representative of 'the greatest' albums per se, but certainly indicitive of the LPs that mean the most to me right now. Think of me as an anorak-clad indie-popper with dreadlocks, buffalo sandals, ripped jeans and a set of glowsticks and you'd get some sort of idea of not only my musical tastes, but why I now let my wife choose my wardrobe. And if like some you think this chart is a little too diverse for it's own good... seriously, live a little, try new things, get out more and stop listening to Dad Rock (apart from Crosby, Stills and Nash). Constantly on the hunt for something new to make my soul sing, so if you think you can help, drop me a line... Jimmy, May 2013.

Strawberry JamAnimal Collective
PICK - Peacebone; FIRST HEARD: Bracknell, South Hill Arts Park (live - thanks to Rob who dragged me along to the gig). In my eyes, THE group of the 21st Century, and in Avey/Panda our generation's version of Lennon/McCartney. My current favourite band, by a VERY long way. Also helps that the wife hates them.

The Velvet Underground And NicoThe Velvet Underground
PICK - All Tomorrow's Parties; FIRST HEARD: 6th Form. Bought the CD with a WHSmith voucher (consequently redeemed in Our Price) gained for winning my school's GCSE History prize. I'm sure they'd rather I'd cashed it in for Dangerfield's The Strange Death of Liberal England.

PICK - Guiding Light; FIRST HEARD: off back on Melody Maker CD compy, 1994. Songs that last 10 minutes! What?! Started my whole 70s New York fixation. The title track would make an excellent Guitar Hero challenge, too.

Heart Of The CongosThe Congos
PICK - Ark Of The Covenant; FIRST HEARD: off back of Rough Trade 25 Years compy. The zenith of my roots reggae years, the best thing that the spectral hand of Lee 'Scratch' Perry ever touched, and the most spiritually uplifting album I'll ever likely listen to from start to finish.

Bryter LayterNick Drake
PICK - Northern Sky; FIRST HEARD: off back on Melody Maker CD compy, 1994. My spiritual awakening and pastoral ephiphany, which also prompted me to reinvent my shopping habits and raid charity shops for vintage shirts. I always swore I'd marry any female fan of Nick Drake on the spot.

BandwagonesqueTeenage Fanclub
PICK - The Concept; FIRST HEARD: 6th Form. Glam rock meets Alex Chilton in Northern Britain, wears denim and sounds like the backdrop to many a foppish 90s disco. Of which I rarely attended, bearing in mind everyone was listening to Nirvana at the time. Great cover too.

Forever ChangesLove
PICK - Maybe The People Would Be The Times, or Between Clark & Hilldale; FIRST HEARD: HMV, Guildford. Around the time the snot caked beneath my pants, and during the phase all my Saturday job earnings were spent on classic LPs. Also best use of a Mariachi band, which you don't see much of these days - it's all about fuckin' pan-pipes and auto-tune.

The Beatles (The White Album)The Beatles
PICK - The Continuing Story Of Bungalow Bill (which coincidentally my Mum used to sing to me when I was a young'un); FIRST HEARD: goodness knows. I used to use my parents' Beatles albums as makeshift carpet footslides as a toddler. I blame this for my musical obsessions.

Dandelion GumBlack Moth Super Rainbow
PICK - Lost, Picking Flowers In The Woods; FIRST HEARD: via Pitchfork. Psycedelic silliness made with a Mellotron permanently stuck on the Flute setting about getting lost in forests. An essential accompaniment to my 2007 trip to the Summer Solstice at Stonehenge. Would probably would be no.1 if I did acid.

Grotesque (After The Gramme)The Fall
PICK - A New Face In Hell; FIRST HEARD: Play It Again, Aldershot (although Peel may have had a hand in persuading me). A total revelation, which didn't really hit home until my Mum said she loathed them and I gained an English Lit. degree. Never can decide if Hex or Grotesque deserves this spot - I love them both equally. Come back next week and check which one's currently annoying the wife most, when most likely a sudden surge in popularity (mine) will see Room To Live usurp the pair of 'em. Or maybe not - have you heard Papal Visit? Advice = don't.

Your notes are really impressive. This melodic-harmonic triumvirate may be complemented by The House of Love - Fontana Album, 1990. Many more try to follow, proving a primary role of these mentioned. I tried to show such a time sequence in the field of orchestral, polyphonic approach. Pet sounds stands first, then comes Sgt. Pepper, two decades passing - The soft bulletin and Illinoise.

Not exactly my tastes. Been trying to listen to 3 out of your top 4 for the last few years - i.e. Pet Sounds, Loveless and the Ramones and cant get into any of the 3 and just dont know if I like their sound & style. Still I have not given up and in all fairness only listened to bits of them. There is just so music to listen to and so little years left one has to prioritize. If there is a heaven I wonder will we get to properly listen to 'everything' one day. Surely we will, if we make it that is :)

Still one of my favorites on the site, the only chart I've seen with Tomboy in the top 10, I respect the hell out of that.

Not only is the album selection crazy various and really awesome (there's lots that I haven't heard of), you writing about your first listen on every album is amazing. I don't know if I could remember all that. Clearly every single album on this chart is extremely personal, and that's fantastic. Great chart.

@AMS - interesting point about MPP. I would say given the simplicity you allude to re. Loveless then Panda Bear's Tomboy would be a more natural step. Being a huge Animal Collective fan (seeing them for the 7th time at Field Day in 10 days) I adore MPP, but as Strawberry Jam was the first album of theirs I truly loved, coupled with Noah Lennox's Brain Wilson-esque sense of harmony and melody, Tomboy joins Loveless and Pet Sounds in my all-time triumphant triumvirate.

Distinctive chart. Melodic themes of Loveless are simple songs, as Kevin Shields said, the comparison is mbv, in his own words, impressionistic approach. In this context Pet sounds and Loveless linked together form a sequence - different standards of expression in different decades. The next step is Merriweather Post Pavilion.
