Top 100 Greatest Music Albums by
noWaxJim (2013)
AKA 100 LPs to Save When the World Caves In, or at least the 100 I currently have with me in my pocket squashed onto my iPhone (and hence carry everywhere). Inspired in equal parts by John Peel, my mother, countless friends I've met over the years and music magazines/internet sites. My chart is hardly definitive (strictly one album per act, no compilations - which is a pain in the arse as this means Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, The Vaselines and Talulah Gosh unfortunately get the boot), and by no means representative of 'the greatest' albums per se, but certainly indicitive of the LPs that mean the most to me right now. Think of me as an anorak-clad indie-popper with dreadlocks, buffalo sandals, ripped jeans and a set of glowsticks and you'd get some sort of idea of not only my musical tastes, but why I now let my wife choose my wardrobe. And if like some you think this chart is a little too diverse for it's own good... seriously, live a little, try new things, get out more and stop listening to Dad Rock (apart from Crosby, Stills and Nash). Constantly on the hunt for something new to make my soul sing, so if you think you can help, drop me a line... Jimmy, May 2013.

| PICK - Goodbye Girls; FIRST HEARD: via Anna. I'd never given Broadcast a thought until my Gig Buddy decided to namedrop them one day when she forgot the meeeeeeelk. Luckily I paid attention and fell in love. Only regret is I never got to see them live... RIP. | |||||||||||||||||||||

22. (=)![]() | The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars | David Bowie
| PICK - Hang Onto Yourself; FIRST HEARD: Uni (thanks to Eilir). Got into Bowie far too late. My first exposure was from Eilir playing me "The Laughing Gnome" and "The Gospel According To Tony Day", the latter making me laugh so hard my head hurt. I always liked him when he was at his most kooky (Bowie, not Eilir). Now preferred to Hunky Dory due to my rendition of "Starman" at a Karaoke night in Egypt. | |||||||||||||||||||||

23. (=)![]() | Chelsea Girl | Nico
| PICK - Fairest Of The Seasons; FIRST HEARD: via fixation with VU&N. The 60s version of Ms Newsom, in so far as her voice is the sonic equivalent of Marmite. The best 'strangled cat' (c. my other half) I've ever had the pleasure to have invade my psyche. | |||||||||||||||||||||

24. (=)![]() | Going Blank Again | Ride
| PICK - Leave Them All Behind; FIRST HEARD: via The Chart Show Indie Chart, ITV, early 90s. Second ever band I saw live. Home Counties shoegazing at its finest, and in Leave Them All Behind an anthem for any self-righteous indie boy who harks for the halcyon days when dozens of effects pedals were the de facto signature of cool. | |||||||||||||||||||||

25. (=)![]() | Crosby, Stills & Nash | Crosby, Stills & Nash
| PICK - Suite: Judy Blue Eyes; FIRST HEARD: at my parents (thanks to Mum). God I love CS&N - even if the wife says they sound like 'a bunch of hippies for dads'. Worth taking this appraisal with a pinch of salt. She likes Take That, by the way. | |||||||||||||||||||||

| PICK - We Need Love; FIRST HEARD: off back of 100% Dynamite compy. One of Jamaica's most under-rated singers and Studio One riddims to die for. Soul meets reggae and comes out smiling. Shame bugger all people know about it. | |||||||||||||||||||||

27. (48) ![]() | Moon Safari | Air
| PICK - Ce Matin La; FIRST HEARD: Our Price, Canterbury. Ahhh... the soundtrack to a French day-trip with Emma, Matt and Lizzy... happy days, driving on the wrong side of the road and going into a 'crepe' shop for 'crepes' and asking for 'a pancake'. Happy, carefree times. And cheap booze. | |||||||||||||||||||||

| PICK - Broken Face. FIRST HEARD: Peter's flat, Farnham. My old band mate had a poster of the slightly risque cover sitting in his digs, and everytime I see a Spanish flamenco dancer with her knockers out I am reminded of this. My fave Pixies album - they sound at home with Albini. | |||||||||||||||||||||

29. (27) ![]() | The Stone Roses | The Stone Roses
| PICK - I Am The Resurrection; FIRST HEARD: Xmas present @ 16 years old. Bless Ma and Pa, they always knew what I wanted. The one band you would NEVER want to reform - one amazing LP, one dud, tons of awful live performances. They'd never capture the magic again. What's that you say... that HAVE reformed. Bugger. | |||||||||||||||||||||

| PICK - Oh, How To Do Now; FIRST HEARD: 2005, in-store listening post in MVC. Couldn't believe my luck when I stumbled upon this proto-punk, proto-Krautrock bunch of loony G.Is. Watch the YouTube clips from their German TV appearance from the mid-60s - the crowd haven't got a clue! | |||||||||||||||||||||

Oh wow this chart is really fantastic. Love the diversity.
Great list, you absolutely put a lot of work into the list. Plus any list that includes Loveless makes me smile
Your notes are really impressive. This melodic-harmonic triumvirate may be complemented by The House of Love - Fontana Album, 1990. Many more try to follow, proving a primary role of these mentioned. I tried to show such a time sequence in the field of orchestral, polyphonic approach. Pet sounds stands first, then comes Sgt. Pepper, two decades passing - The soft bulletin and Illinoise.
Not exactly my tastes. Been trying to listen to 3 out of your top 4 for the last few years - i.e. Pet Sounds, Loveless and the Ramones and cant get into any of the 3 and just dont know if I like their sound & style. Still I have not given up and in all fairness only listened to bits of them. There is just so music to listen to and so little years left one has to prioritize. If there is a heaven I wonder will we get to properly listen to 'everything' one day. Surely we will, if we make it that is :)
Still one of my favorites on the site, the only chart I've seen with Tomboy in the top 10, I respect the hell out of that.
Interesting chart. Lot of different albums which I have not heard. Enjoy the stories behind each album
Not only is the album selection crazy various and really awesome (there's lots that I haven't heard of), you writing about your first listen on every album is amazing. I don't know if I could remember all that. Clearly every single album on this chart is extremely personal, and that's fantastic. Great chart.
looks ordinary at the first
but actually very very epic chart, I like it
@AMS - interesting point about MPP. I would say given the simplicity you allude to re. Loveless then Panda Bear's Tomboy would be a more natural step. Being a huge Animal Collective fan (seeing them for the 7th time at Field Day in 10 days) I adore MPP, but as Strawberry Jam was the first album of theirs I truly loved, coupled with Noah Lennox's Brain Wilson-esque sense of harmony and melody, Tomboy joins Loveless and Pet Sounds in my all-time triumphant triumvirate.
Distinctive chart. Melodic themes of Loveless are simple songs, as Kevin Shields said, the comparison is mbv, in his own words, impressionistic approach. In this context Pet sounds and Loveless linked together form a sequence - different standards of expression in different decades. The next step is Merriweather Post Pavilion.
