Top 100 Greatest Music Albums by Kalipto

My favorite albums from my favorite artists. I've only included albums that I've listened through quite a bit and enjoyed (obviously :P), so if something isn't here, it's probably because I haven't finished it yet.

This is probably going to be a shocker to almost everyone. Yes, this is the greatest album (that I've listened through) for me. From an objective point of view I'd say it's okay but no where near number one. But from my point of view, it's a rare constant in my life. I've been listening to it ever since its release and never once got bored of it. There is definitely nostalgia here, and I guess that's one of the things I love about it. "The Cave" (and the album as a whole) creates a certain sensation for me, a combination of how I felt listening to it 6 years ago, listening to it for the hundredth time and listening to it right now, and that sensation will only keep getting stronger. It's the song I listen to when I'm at my best and my worst, when I'm joyous or depressed. I love this album unconditionally and that's why it's number one for me. But, I guess that's just my opinion :)

I consider Babel to be a sort of second part to Sigh No More, as it is very similar in many ways.

While their first two albums have more of an indie rock feel to them, I found that their darker electronic rock sound fitted Smith's vocals much better. Editors are a band that have really changed my perspective for music and have marked the turning point in my life. The point at which I decided to finally listen, not just to them but to everything. And after a lot of consideration and countless listenings, I found that "In This Light and On This Evening" to be their crowning achievement, with "The Weight of Your Love" coming in at a close second. "This Light" marked the change of style for the band, and the following albums built upon that sound, but it was the beginning that was the most important.

This is the true sound of Springsteen for me. Taking all of the elements that made his earlier hits such a success and evolving them into something truly wonderful. "Empty Sky" is the reason I started listening to the Boss and is one of my all time favorite songs. Even though his earlier albums were more influential, it's this one that I respect and enjoy the most, simply because it's free of any expectations. He'll always have "Born in the U.S.A." and "Born To Run", two of his most important releases, but it's this one that felt the most relaxed and natural.

Most of their work is a bloody masterpiece, but "The Division Bell" is just a touching and magnificent album, although it will always be overshadowed by the beautiful "High Hopes", it's the other tracks that really build up to that fantastic moment, and without them the finale just wouldn't be the same.

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 83.5/100, a mean average of 81.4/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 81.4/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 10.9.

Yeah I quite like many of the albums and artists that you list. It looks like you had your music - Nick Cave, Bruce Springstein and Editors feature often, but it then looks like your picking up some new artists to you probably from seeing charts and recommendations from sites like this - which is what I guess this site is all about. So well done for that. As you say, as you get to listen to other stuff it might start to feature - I'm on a similar journey and finding loads of new and exciting albums and artists

As long as someone's taste is interesting it doesn't necessarily have to be good. Although the chart is frankly, bizarre, there are some interesting insights into the mind of a peculiar, peculiar man, whoever he may be. Quite a few albums on the list are great, yet the placement is odd. Who would ever have thought that a list which contains Bowie and Pink Floyd would have their albums placed below the albums of such bland and forgettable mediocrity like Editors and Mumford and Sons.

In any case, a brave chart, in the same way that being objectively wrong is sometimes brave.

are you quite sure that Division Bell is the only Pink Floyd album better than Wish You Were Here, The Wall, and Dark Side of the Moon? haven't you ever heard More, Ummagumma, Obscured By Clouds, the one with all of the empty beds on the cover, or Roger Waters' solo efforts? I can't believe you could only think of 1 PF album better than those 3, you're breaking my balls, man.

more interesting bits:

editors' best =/= back room?
queen's 2nd best = a kind of magic?
bruce springsteen's the rising + human touch > born to run?

you should prob listen to queen's the works, jazz, news of the world, queen II, and a day at the races, you'll probably like them more than a kind of magic.

Brave--and probably controversial--to list Mumford and Sons at #1 and #2. I'm not so sure about Babel, but Sigh No More is really a terrific album that became a cliche way too soon. I (mostly) don't fault the band for that.
