Top 100 Greatest Music Albums by Robert Anton Wilson (2013)

« View previous chartView next chart »

This decade charts thing is really playing with my head. No longer any problem entering all or nearly all the albums I want on this site (except for the 70s he he) so no need to tweak my overall chart to point out hidden gems anymore ... but making all this jive. Ooh la la.

I know my chart gives the impression that I do not listen to current albums (only 4 albums from years 2000 and up) but this is because I find that the artists I currently love tend to have released a very strong album early on in their career (eg Radiohead, PJ Harvey, Muse, Peal Jam, ...). And other than a big bulge of albums in the early 70s, a lot of them prog, (guilty as charged), I find it is fairly all over the place.

Chart updated: 03/09/2013 17:25 (Created: 06/04/2011 22:23). Chart size: 100 albums.

The Joshua TreeU2
War was the album that broke U2 to the world but The Joshua Tree was the album that made them the greatest band of the day. This album was so unexpected with its tribute to America and its bigger than life attitude from a band of guys who so far had been so shy (sorry people if we disturb your conversation but we are the band playing tonight). Bono did his Elvis act and the band just stole the charts with great songwriting. What makes it really great is that it has something for everyone. Want to spark a romance (With or without You), want to bitch about societal woes (Bullet the Blue Sky), want a good folksy/proggy story (Red Hill Mining town), soul worthy of Ella Fitzgerald (I still haven't found what I'm Looking For). Now that we know where U2 stands, some find this album overproduced and arrogant. Well they are just plain wrong, this definitely wasn't a sell-out. This is the coming of age of the “boys” next door attending their first party without pimples to make them self-conscious.

Up To HereThe Tragically Hip
The other current band (along with Pearl jam) I have been faithful to since their inception. Once again a torn decision to make about their "best". The first 2 albums (which are really the 2nd and 3rd as is the case for Nirvana) have that special energy that comes from finally being able to play in the big leagues (which is why I keep juggling between Up to Here and Road Apples). I could have easily have been swayed to list “Day for Night”, “Trouble at the Henhouse” or “Phantom Power” instead. Another band whose best album always seems to be the last one you listened to.

GreenR.E.M.
Tough decision to change from 'Automatic for the People' back to 'Green' but let's face it I prefer 'Green'. The rauchiest and harshest REM. This is not the REM that so many seem to hate here on BEA. My faves: 'Turn you inside out' and 'I Remember California' which makes a perfect listen back to back with 'When the Leve Breaks' from Led Zep IV.

KoyaanisqatsiPhilip Glass
What is the point of changing the album on the turntable or the CD in the player if the next album is to be more of the same. Koyaanisqatsi, the soundtrack of the mvie by Giorogio Moroder. Electronica, not the dance type, more the dreadfully intellectual type my dears. Musical pieces built around repetitive structures that just grows on whiffs of wind until they overwhelm you like a thunderstorm.

Peter Gabriel IVPeter Gabriel
The Rhythm of the Heat .... Peter Gabriel's music was so great in the movie Birdy. His third album (melt) is also outstanding. The US tour with Robert Lepage as scene director was just out of this world particularly the endng when all the musicians walk into a travel bag that Peter then picks up and walks away with, the illusion was unreal.

Love Over GoldDire Straits
This is one band I have no time for their commercial output. The songwriting, lyricism, and great musicianship is highly deserving. I think this album is the one of theirs that avoids best the trappings of commercialism (although it does include Industrial disease) while truly showcasing all they have to offer. Telegraph Road is epic.

The less reggae and the most rock offering from The Police. Their Swan Song. Like many bands often do, they wanted to mix the recipe and reinvent themselves so they went and hid in the wilderness of Morin Heights and gave us their best. Thank you guys.

Moving PicturesRush
I don't listen to Rush much anymore these days but I used to like them a lot - when they were playing my age. This is their most commercial non-commercial album. I gave up on them when they introduced rap into their repertoire, they never won me back.

Fresh Fruit For Rotting VegetablesDead Kennedys
This is my raw energy no holds barred little indulgence. The texts are hilarious in that "this is horrible" sort of way “Kill the poor”, "I kill children, I make mama`s cry”, “God told me to skin you alive” ... you know, that sort of wholesome family fun. That raw power punk just does not seem to age for me. If you do not like that album be wary, could you be one of the rotting vegetables of the title?

Stunning chart. It does have a clear 70's feel, but the choices are highly interesting, unexpected and personal. Really, your chart blew me away. Great job!

I had no idea you liked prog that much. Great chart, I've just started to get into Cake and am happy to see Fashion Nugget on here too.

Dark Side, Crime Of The Century, and everything by Yes is all awesome.

Also, I agree Thick As A Brick is Jethro Tull's best.

Really liking this chart. I'll have to give Genesis a second try, all I've heard is Wind And Wuthering.

Not listened to much prog so not familiar with a lot of your choices but respect the time you've put into your comments. I accept that Nevermind took the underground overground but Nirvana were influenced by some great 80's guitar bands. See Sonic Youth, Pixies, Husker Du, Dinosaur Jr, Replacements, R.E.M., Mudhoney, Soundgarden.
