Pure brilliance. Every note on this album is spot on. Incredible slow-winding guitar and saxophone solos that make an impression every single time. A unique sound. Some find this album too slow. I can see the argument, but for me the slow pace actually adds to the beauty: it allows for enough time to really breathe in and digest every note. The guitar solo in Utrus Horas, starting at 03:42 is a good example, continuing until 06:30. The saxophone slowly displacing the singing in Coumba, from about 05:00 is another highlight. Yet another is the part in Ledi Ndieme M'Bodj, with the guitar solo starting from 02:55, continuing until the vocals make a fantastically sweet comeback at 03:42. And so I could go on detailing incredible sub-sections in the other songs. Every other album I listen too much in a certain period of time, I get tired of it. Except for this one. Been listening to it for the past 20 years, on a weekly basis I'd say, and I just can't get enough. [First added to this chart: 01/19/2017]

Absolutely superb and unique. There is nothing else like it. Heroin remains the highlight; simply the best song about drugs ever written. The continuous change in pace is truly exhilarating. The first time (@ 01:20) at " cause it makes me feel like I'm a man; when I put a spike into my vein", the listener really gets a kick, and is drawn back to these addictive accelerations throughout the song. I can think of no other song where the interplay between the music and the lyrics is this brilliant and intricate.

I'll Be Your Mirror is a gem of a love song, with the best part at "I find it hard to believe you don't know, the beauty you are; but if you don't, let me be your eyes" (@ 01:09). Other highlights include I'm Waiting for My Man ("I'm just lookin'  for a dear, dear friend of mine" @ 1:10) and Femme Fatale ( "She builds you up to just put you down" @ 00:38).

Dylan's best. A sublime mixture of bitterness and warmth. The highlight is Idiot Wind, a dark, vengeful masterpiece. "Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your teeth; you're an idiot, babe, it's a wonder that you still know how to breathe" (@01:27). After almost 7 minutes of blaming the other, there is a final twist when Dylan turns to examine his own role, in the final words of the song "We're idiots, babe, it's a wonder we can even feed ourselves" (@06:55).

Tangled up in Blue is a great song, particularly the part in each verse where the pace accelerates, for the first time at "and i was standing on the side of the road, rain falling on my shoes" (@00:31). Other highlights include You're Gonna Make me Lonesome When You Go, Shelter from the Storm, and Buckets of Rain.

An album without weak songs.

Admittedly some youth sentiment here; but the album is very strong, and has a lot of energy. Highlights: Lithium, in particular the yeheheheheyeahye parts (1st time @ 00:38). Other key tracks for me are Drain You and Lounge Act. In Drain You, the intermezzo from 01:36 until 02:20 is characteristic, building up to relaunching the song's characteristic riff @02:33, and the resumption of Cobain's singing @02:41 (One baby to another says I'm lucky to have met you). Very energetic set-up. That is also the case for Lounge Act, where the second half (from 01:33; Truth, covered in your security) is almost identical to the first half, yet so different. A magic record of timeless quality from the spiritual home of the blues. Ali Farka Toure is the towering figure of the Malian music scene since its independence from France. Some may prefer his truly authentic albums above this joint effort with Ry Cooder, but in the end I enjoy this one the most. Reserved beauty.

Highlights: Soukora, Diaraby and particulary Lasidan. Its underlying ever-continuing bass-riff is almost hypnotic.
