Chutes Too NarrowThe Shins
This is the only album I've ever listened to that doesn't have ONE single moment from any song I don't absolutely love. No matter how I feel, every time I pop this in it makes my day 10 times better. I like to think of this album as retro indie pop rock, because that's the only way I can describe it. A retro 60's sound is updated and mixes with a modern day indie sound, and it works brilliantly. It isn't trying to be a great album, but the transcendent melodies and stunning lyrics make it just that. Favorite songs: So Says I, Fighting In A Sack, Kissing The Lipless, Young Pilgrims.

Siamese DreamThe Smashing Pumpkins
Probably the biggest and most ambitious album I've ever heard (coin flip with Loveless), the amount of guitars is staggering. I can listen to it almost every single day and it never gets old. It has a ton of different sounds and yet has that unmistakable Pumpkins character. One of those bands that has their own entirely original sound yet never seems to have two songs that sound alike. That to me is the ultimate sign of a great band. The dynamics are bold and almost unparalleled. One moment it's sparse and subtle guitar work, then suddenly it sounds like your surrounded by 10 or more buzzing and driving guitars. It took the soft/loud dynamic from the Pixies, Nirvana etc., and brought it to a different level, never following a formula within a song. The best example is Soma, one of the greatest songs I've ever heard. And you have to appreciate Chamberlain's otherworldly drumming. Favorite songs: Rocket, Soma, Luna, Geek USA, Cherub Rock, Mayonaise, Hummer

Led Zeppelin IVLed Zeppelin
The ultimate sign of Zeppelin's greatness is that they have continually gotten more popular as time has gone on. Where the Beatles' music and many others from the 60's and 70's has aged considerably, Zeppelin's music somehow still sounds fresh to this day. IV was their greatest album, although depending on the day sometimes not quite my favorite. Stairway may be overplayed but it is still one of the greatest songs ever recorded, and possibly the greatest guitar solo. Every song is inspiring and original. Favorite songs: Stairway, Misty Mountain Hop, Black Dog, Going To California.

TenPearl Jam
People tend to forget or don't realize that this came out before Nevermind. It melded a classic sound with a more modern touch, a blend that sounded truly original upon its release. Amazing solos from McCready (Alive is one of my all time favorites) and great riffs from Gossard peppered throughout. Vedder's voice was stunning in this time period, and from the start he's been one of the greatest lyricists on earth. A band that has since been tirelessly copied and emulated but never even close to duplicated. No weak track here, and some of the lesser known cuts are the best. And beyond the actual album some of the B sides from Ten are brilliant too (Yellow Ledbetter, Wash, Footsteps, Alone, etc) Favorite songs: Release, Deep, Porch, Jeremy, Once, Alive...I could list every track.

OK ComputerRadiohead
For the longest time I didn't understand the obsession with Radiohead and refused to give them a fair shot. When I finally did I was kicking myself for waiting so damn long. The first three songs of this album are the best 3 opening tracks I've ever heard. The sound and concept was so far from what anyone else was doing at the time, including themselves, that its truly amazing they even tried it. I'll admit that a lot of their stuff after this goes over my head, but this was the absolute perfect balance between their earlier alternative sound and their later expansive work. Favorite songs: Paranoid Android, Airbag, Subterranean Homesick Alien.

Led Zeppelin IILed Zeppelin
Probably the greatest guitar riff album ever recorded. Ramble On is one of my favorite songs of all time and Bring It On Home is my favorite riff of all time. Every member of the band shines here at one point or another. So many tracks that are still instantly recognizable over 40 years later. Favorite songs: Ramble On, Bring It On Home, Lemon Song, Heartbreaker, What Is And What Should Never Be.

The Creek Drank The CradleIron And Wine
Over the past year plus I've become more and more enchanted by this masterpiece, now an album I can't see myself living without. A subdued acoustic southern tinged classic. Upon first listen it doesn't sound like something that should appear in a greatest album chart, but it has a certain magic in it's simplicity and lo fi gentle sound. Sam Beam seems to channel Nick Drake at points with his soft vocal delivery over nothing but an acoustic guitar. Also love when he adds banjo or slide guitar to give it another layer. It sounds like it should be playing on some southern farmhouse's back porch. Favorite songs: Weary Memory, Promise What You Will, The Rooster Moans, Upward Over The Mountain.

In The Aeroplane Over The SeaNeutral Milk Hotel
By far the most unique album I’ve heard…this website is what finally introduced me to it. The first thing I noticed was his voice, which is very raw and very imperfect. But these qualities make it extremely endearing as the cd progresses. It’s wonderful to think how a voice like his can end up fitting so ideally into such beautiful music. The songs themselves are charming and mesmerizing, creating a sort of wayward atmosphere that only exists in this music. The dynamics are simply crazy, as a singular acoustic guitar strumming a rather simple chord progression can be only seconds from massive horns, bagpipes, huge fuzzy electric guitars, or who knows what else. It’s odd and maniacal yet somehow also accessible. I know it’s a polarizing cd for people who have heard it, but if you’re willing to let it take you where it’s going, it’s a dazzling journey. Favorite songs: Two Headed Boy Part II, Communist Daughter, Holland, 1945, King Of Carrot Flowers Part I

The Colour And The ShapeFoo Fighters
Yes I suppose it's true that they aren't the most original rock band going, but there's something to be said for an album in which I never even have the urge to skip a song. There's only a handful that I can say that about, and most of them are above this one. And even if it isn't the most original, every song has its own singularity and they all work to make up a fantastic collection. Favorite songs: New Way Home, Everlong, Hey Johnny Park!, My Poor Brain.

Jar Of FliesAlice In Chains
I'm amazed more people don't have this on their list. Technically it's an EP, and the short length is my only knock against it. A hard rock, even borderline metal band stripping down like this was a huge risk, and they hit an absolute home run. Completely original sounding collection, which is always one of the biggest points in making an album great. A lot of people say their lyrics aren't great, and I guess that's true, but when the music is this stunning I sometimes don't even notice the lyrics. Favorite songs: Rotten Apple, I Stay Away, Don't Follow, Nutshell.

Led Zeppelin inspirations, through the decades, come to White Stripes and The Raconteurs - that is the axis of the chart.
Soft pieces, e.g. The Shins do the panorama. Individual, valuable choice
