Top 100 Greatest Music Albums by daftpunter (2013)

« View previous chartView next chart »

When I was five my mom bought me a 45 of Pleasant Valley Sunday that I played on my little multi-disk player with my Peter Pan 45's. In the fifth grade my buddy Owen turned me on to Kiss and Queen. Some guy at a record store recommended to my Mom Sweet's Desolation Boulevard and K.C. and the Sunshine Band. My high school buddy's dad owned an AOR station so we had access to a ton of music (though half the albums were worthless because Dad would put finger nail polish on the album cuts to control the dj's). That's also where I developed my nervous twitch when I hear the Beatles too often. We discovered the Rolling Stone Record Guide, The Trouser Press Record Guide, and Robert Christgau (the 1001 albums/songs books have been added to the reference of late). For my freshman year in college Grandmom gave me $1000 for spending money for the year that I blew in about three weeks at the local record store(ooh, that reminds me, I've GOT to listen to Damn the Torpedoes soon!). Over the past thirty years I've put together a collection of music reflecting the eclectic and clasic, usually without ever having heard the music I'd purchased. But the collection is diverse, consisting of about 2500 pieces of vinyl and 1500 cd's. I've discovered the Public library system that has given me access to inumerable albums. And you'll notice that the list doesn't have a bunch of surprises, accepting maybe the order. Because great is still great. The top 20 have been pretty consistant over the years. The next 80 are an incomplete and ever changing array. As far as the more recent albums not making the charts, I direct you to the decade (and soon yearly) charts. Albums that supplant truly classic works have a truly high standard to achieve. It's taken decades for some albums to click. Believe me, the Fratellis Costello Music and The Cults are on the cusp. But are they better than Armed Forces, Led Zeppelin III or The Who Sell Out, or Rod Stewart's Every Picture Tells A Story, all of which did not make the list? Your call on your charts. Take a look at the rest of mine to see where your album sits. I think it's about time for a do-over. 3/23/13: I figure I've obtained a good 450 albums since I wrote this thing. So now I've got to weigh my love for some of the new material vs what I know is awesome. Anybody think that's not a pleasant conundrum?

UndertowTool
For fifteen years I had this album pegged as a top five. Maynard's anger and pain needed an outlet. I identified. Millions agreed. I don't feel they've improved on the formula. This is before Tool wanted to grow up and become King Crimson. They were already fully realized.

NevermindNirvana
The savior of rock? In 1992 we all thought so. It didn't come out of my disc player for about 6 months. A Boston rip off as a hit single and enough pissed off energy to qualify as the "Never Mind The Bullocks" of the 90's. But don't blame grunge on this album. Cobain KNOWS how to play the guitar.

Murder BalladsNick Cave And The Bad Seeds
If there was ever an artist that this type of work was designed for it's Mr. Cave. A morbid sod to begin with, he lends an extra tension and believability to this overworked subject matter. An original and complex work with incredible guest vocalists. Like looking at a car wreck. Only it's in my headphones and the imagery is the wreck. Gotta visit O'Malley's Bar.

To those of you who get pissed that old shits like me don't put in more 'modern' albums, well, if they had songs, musicianship and production this good we would. Radiohead had the Bends two years earlier, but this is wear it all came together. Pink Floyd on meth instead of ludes.

You wanna know why everybody hurts? Because Dave Berry quit, sucking out there soul, they kept going for ten more years putting out the kind of stuff that diminishes a legend. They're last great album. Know what...I'm still bummed they called it a day.

ParklifeBlur
You know that episode of South Park where Chef's parents exercise the spirit of Kenny out of Cartman and it ends up in the Roast? I think that's what happened here with the spirit of 60's Ray Davies, only there was a victim child for the spirit to enter. Just a great record start to finish.

Jagged Little PillAlanis Morissette
It's 1995 and I'm sitting on the back porch during our beer of the week/album nights (miss you Buschman!) and You Oughta Know hits the airwaves. I've got a thing for anger. Not made up, metal, hate my dad, the devil is the way b.s. anger. I'm talkin' you screwed up my head, I loved you, I want you dead (unless you kiss me first) anger. This is it. The whole album. It's a little over-produced but so was Nevermind. Right Through You and Ironic are probably better songs than You Oughta Know, and that's saying something. A great record for a really bad mood.

Basically the rocking modern cousin of the Kinks Arthur. In all seriousness I can't give a better compliment than that. The frustration of the English working class summed up in under an hour.

Solid chart with some really well thought out notes in places. Also, love seeing Costello and Sinatra in the top 10

Thank you very much for your comment! :-D

Kinks and Costello in the top 10! Plus Love and Television, the best Ramones albums, and that Flipper album I still never listened to. And of course many of your personal favourites, which is always interesting to see and a guarantee of eclectic tastes.

Sir, your chart is absolutely awesome too ;-)

Goes without saying one of the best charts I've seen on here. You can definitely tell decades of love and thought have gone into this. From the golden era classic rock mould but refreshingly not putting all your faith in bands such as the Beatles. Sounds like as good a way as any to go. P.s. yes Kinks probably the best of the Brit Invasion :0).

Thank you Beatles and Stones fan boy. I have much to learn from your kind. ;) Pet Sounds is a bore fest as well, apart from the first song which is incredible. But number 2...? Really!? With Born To Run, At Fillmore East, Remain in Light, Pink Flag so high this chart contains good content overall. I can tell you have been listening to a lot of music.

The comments do both encouraging and advertising work, in art terms. These liner notes act as a professional and strictly personal review, not once a person may think, why not acquainted with the album of such a deep impression?
