"Did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts? Hot ashes for trees? Hot air for a cool breeze? Cold comfort for change?"
Although I personally don't like Welcome to the Machine or Have A Cigar very much as songs, the album wouldn't be anywhere near as good without them. Shine On You Crazy Diamond, creates a bleak, gloomy tone for the album, which is taken even further in the droning Welcome to the Machine and the cynical Have A Cigar. Then in the middle of a hard-rocking guitar solo, suddenly everything cuts out to the lonely sound of somebody playing an acoustic guitar and singing along to an old radio, pining for a lost friend. I always get annoyed whenever I hear the title track outside of the context of the album; I find it diminishes its value. The album ends on a funkier, slightly more upbeat reprise of the first track, and closes with a synth instrumental that resolves on a major chord, giving a hopeful end to an album that had started out so bleak.
Favourite tracks: Wish You Were Here, Shine On You Crazy Diamond Parts I-V, Shine On You Crazy Diamond Parts VI-IX [First added to this chart: 01/31/2017]
