Top 100 Greatest Music Albums by Mother Nature's Son (2013)

« View previous chartView next chart »

My favourite albums of all time.

..yes, I know I'm a Beatles maniac. I know my chart is dominated by certain bands and artists, mainly my favourites. Maybe it will change, maybe it won't, but one thing is for sure: I'm not going to make a 1 album per artist rule. This chart's purpose is to cover my 100 favourite albums, not my 100 favourite bands/artists.

I've decided to rank all the songs on every album, only need a few albums. Hopefully, this will give you an idea of what I like most and least about an album. For the albums you haven't heard, it can also be a guide to what tracks you should check out first before you decide if it's something for you or not.

I also try to keep my charts, including year and decade charts, consistent. If you see that two or more of my charts aren't consistent, please let me know.

Abbey RoadThe Beatles
My favourite album of all time. If I had to describe it with one sentence, it would be with "oh that magic feeling"! A perfect uplifting album with so many gorgeous moments: The heart-melting opening guitar riff and the epic downward chords in the chorus in "Something", Paul McCartney's vocal in "Oh! Darling" evolving from singing to desperately screaming, the long, but abrupt ending of "I Want You (She's So Heavy)", the unisonant combo of harpsichord and guitar in "Because", the daydreaming intro of "Sun King".. and the vocal harmonies! I could go on forever.

From best to worst: #1 "You Never Give Me Your Money" - #2 "Something" - #3 "Because" - #4 "Golden Slumbers" - #5 "Oh! Darling" - #6 "Sun King" - #7 "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" - #8 "Polythene Pam" - #9 "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" - #10 "Carry That Weight" - #11 "The End" - #12 "Here Comes the Sun" - #13 "Come Together" - #14 "Octopus's Garden" - #15 "She Came In Through the Bathroom Window" - #16 "Mean Mr. Mustard - #17 "Her Majesty"

The WallPink Floyd
Sends me back in time like no other album. If I could, then I would give up all I have today to relive the day and the period in my life when I first time heard the triumphant riff of "In the Flesh?". The self-pitiful nature of the album, the war atmospherics and the reoccurring "oooh, babe!"s are all for the better making it an ever more powerful album. I wish more musicians had the guts to attempt creating an album this large-scale.

From best to worst: #1 "Mother" - #2 "Nobody Home" - #3 "Comfortably Numb" - #4 "Hey You" - #5 "The Trial" - #6 "The Thin Ice" - #7 "The Happiest Days of Our Lives" - #8 "Don't Leave Me Now" - #9 "In the Flesh?" - #10 "In the Flesh" - #11 "The Show Must Go On" - #12 "Goodbye Cruel World" - #13 "Is There Anybody Out There?" - #14 "Goodbye Blue Sky" - #15 "Run Like Hell" - #16 "Waiting for the Worms" - #17 "One of My Turns" - #18 "Outside the Wall" - #19 "Empty Spaces" - #20 "Another Brick in the Wall Part 2" - #21 "Young Lust" - #22 "Another Brick in the Wall Part 1" - #23 "Vera" - #24 "Another Brick in the Wall Part 3" - #25 "Stop" - #26 "Bring the Boys Back Home"

The Dark Side Of The MoonPink Floyd
"The Great Gig in the Sky" is such an amazing song-title and sums up the album perfectly. If you one day go to heaven, "The Dark Side of the Moon" will be the last concert playing before the gates of heaven open to let you in and reveal to you the secret of the meaning of life!

The Beatles (The White Album)The Beatles
"The White Album" covers almost every style of music, which gives you no clue about what's next (unless you know it inside out as I do). A very fresh and sprawling album with tons of great songs.

RevolverThe Beatles
On their way to complete psychedelia, The Beatles are once again expanding their musical palette of different genres, new sounds and experimentation with inventive studio recording techniques. A masterful collection of songs and a slight improvement from their previous "Rubber Soul".

A Night At The OperaQueen
Queen are probably most famous for their all-round classic singles and "A Night at the Opera" edges out all their other albums by having "Bohemian Rhapsody". The album itself is, however, so much more. The tracks are flowing smoothly and nearly all of them are stand-outs. Here you get everything from the cozy feel-good gem, "Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon", to the haunting epic, "The Prophet's Song". Queen's masterpiece in many ways!

From best to worst: #1 "Bohemian Rhapsody" - #2 "Love of My Life" - #3 "You're My Best Friend" - #4 "'39" - #5 "Seaside Rendezvous" - #6 "Death on Two Legs (Dedicated To...)" - #7 "The Prophet's Song" - #8 "I'm in Love with My Car" - #9 "Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon" - #10 "Good Company" - #11 "Sweet Lady" - #12 "God Save the Queen"

Rubber SoulThe Beatles
A major improvement from previous Beatles albums, more precisely a major improvement from albums in general. The Beatles are heavily pushing the boundaries for what's possible in rock music on "Rubber Soul", a folk-influenced masterpiece which has the storytelling vibe from other folk-musicians, but still in favour of catchy melodies. Unbelievable how many times The Beatles had yet left to surpass this masterful collection.

From best to worst: #1 "If I Needed Someone" - #2 "Nowhere Man" - #3 "In My Life" - #4 "Think for Yourself" - #5 "You Won't See Me" - #6 "Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)" - #7 "Girl" - #8 "Michelle" - #9 "I'm Looking Through You" - #10 "Run for Your Life" - #11 "What Goes On" - #12 "Drive My Car" - #13 "The Word" - #14 "Wait"

Love YouThe Beach Boys
While other may praise The Beach Boys highest for their layered production and beautiful vocal harmonies, I see the sheer optimism expressed in their music, despite troubled times, as their greatest gift. The Boys struggled hard to find a clear musical direction in the 70s, which, thankfully, resulted in this unique album. Brian Wilson contributes the childish and extremely unpretentious lyrics on "Love You", a much less ambitious album than previous ones and oddly very synthheavy. "Love You" has two sides: one upbeat, joyous side and one slower, deeper side, though the whole album is downright silly, yet the most personal, raw and honest Beach Boys album!

From best to worst: #1 "I'll Bet He's Nice" - #2 "Let Us Go on This Way" - #3 "Honkin' Down the Highway" - #4 "The Night Was So Young" - #5 "Solar System" - #6 "Let's Put Our Hearts Together" - #7 "Ding Dang" - #8 "Johnny Carson" - #9 "Good Time" - #10 "Mona" - #11 "I Wanna Pick You Up" - #12 "Roller Skating Child" - #13 "Airplane" - #14 "Love is a Woman"

ScreamadelicaPrimal Scream
My life is very paradoxical for liking this album so much and yet at the same time attending so few parties. Maybe I'm just a geek that's addicted to the sick grooves in "Slip Inside This House" and "Don't Fight It, Feel It", the inner trips in "Higher Than the Sun" and "Inner Flight", and the euphoric party anthems in "Loaded" and the albums centerpiece "Come Together". And then it all comes beautifully together (or rather falls apart) in "Shine Like Stars".

From best to worst: #1 "Come Together" - #2 "Higher Than the Sun" - #3 "Don't Fight It, Feel It" - #4 "Shine Like Stars" - #5 "Loaded" - #6 "Slip Inside This House" - #7 "Inner Flight" - #8 "Movin' on Up" - #9 "Higher Than the Sun (A Dub Symphony in Two Parts)" - #10 "I'm Comin' Down" - #11 "Damaged"

Great album chart, I used to do the same thing as you and just put all the albums of the beatles and radiohead, but then I realized its better to have a diversified chart. YOU HAVE KASHMIR! you are probably from Denmark right? I'm from Mexico, its one of my favorite all time bands, although I like better No Balance Palace and Zitilities. By the way, in Mexico for some weird reason they are huge! they had 4 sell out concerts in 2010, and 3 in 2011. Great band and totally unknown and underated

Wow, I'm looking at your chart again, and I must admit that I was very harsh I my previous rating.

While I do dislike many albums here and the fact that four or five bands are over represented, your chart features many interesting choices and favorites of mine (Sigurd Rós, Flaming Lips, Happy Mondays, ...).

This is not by any mean one of my favorite charts, but this is not one of the worst either. It has a good feel to it. Forget my last rating, I was probably on a bad day ^^

...but I still think this would be much better and (even if you think the opposite) more representative of your tastes if you applied a one-album-per-artist rule!

Dominated by a few artists but it's honest and I like it.

Yeah I really love Deep Cuts, couple of week tracks but otherwise quality.

Appreciate the long review although I'm too lazy to write you one back :D Same reason my chart has no comments, just can't be arsed!
