Top 100 Greatest Music Albums by gtroda (2013)

« View previous chartView next chart »

I have been working on a massive update of all my charts based on feedback received here and in the forums. I am going through the process of listening to all of the albums that I own (over 1100 in various formats!) to determine what order they should all be ranked. I'm about 85% complete with the listening so there may still be changes coming but I think I've completed the major framework.

I find that most of these albums I can relate to a certain time or place in my life and that adds to what makes them special. They may not all be the most techically proficient or groundbreaking, but they mean something to me and that's what I've decided to base my chart on.

I will come back and add notes to each album gradually over time.

The Joshua TreeU2
This is the album that made U2 superstars, and rightly so. This album is a perfect mixture of sound and lyric. “Where the Streets Have No Name” has that wide open sound that makes you feel like spreading your arms and running. “With or Without You” has an intimate sound that makes you feel the inner turmoil. And Edge’s guitar playing on “Bullet the Blue Sky” is as raw and in your face as it’s ever been before combining perfectly with the blistering lyrics. The first five songs on this album are flawless. The only reason I don’t have this album as number one is because the back side doesn’t quite hold up to the promise set by the A-side. This is my favorite album made by my favorite band.

HysteriaDef Leppard
I have a confession: I am a fan of 80s hair metal. Hysteria is the king of all hair metal albums and one of the best pop-rock albums ever made. Due to a number of tragedies (the drummer lost an arm!) and missteps during recording it took nearly three years to put this album together, and that time is reflected in the quality of the songs. The album features at least seven hit singles and there are two more songs on here that I think could have been hits. The album is full of good songs that are fun to listen to and sing along with. They make no apologies about being arena rock anthems. I wore this cassette tape out in the late 80s and I still listen to the album regularly.

Born In The U.S.A.Bruce Springsteen
Born in the USA is the first album I remember purchasing. My parents were placing an order with the Columbia House tape club and they let me pick out one tape for myself. I chose this one because I already knew half the songs from the radio because more than half this album was a hit. As I got older my tastes changed and I really didn’t listen to this again until Bruce got the E Street Band back together for the reunion tour in 1998. I remembered how awesome this album was but I was listening from a much different perspective this time. I realized how misunderstood this album is and what a marvelous trick Bruce pulled off when making it. He made a bunch of songs about pain, struggle, frustration, hard times, and loneliness sound like a bunch of celebratory pop songs. I was hooked and I have been a major Bruce fan ever since.

New JerseyBon Jovi
Slippery When Wet propelled Bon Jovi into the stratosphere of popularity and may have had the better singles, but New Jersey is the better album. This album is solid from front to back and the album tracks are nearly as strong as the hit singles. The knock on this album is that they were trying to meld Hysteria with Born to Run. Well, both of those albums are in my top ten and I love that stuff. I love this one too. I wore this cassette out in the late 80's and still listen to the album regularly.

Fair play for putting a load of artists that get a lot of stick of your chart; Snow Patrol, Bryan Adams etc, can't say I agree with them but good on you for sticking with them, apart from that I really like the chart despite only sharing 6 albums.

For some reason I gave this chart a 60/100 sometime in the past, for whatever reason, but looking over it now it deserves better than that. Nice chart.

Mr. November. I recently found Gaslight Anthem and you are right that I really like them! I'll give the Hold Steady a shot.

I actually really enjoy some of your metal/prog and 90s alt-rock picks. Other than that, there is just not much here for me, sorry :( Obviously, it isn't personal...And, as I find myself asking way too often lately, please don't feel the need to be one of those people who immediately counters with a low rating out of spite.

Bit too much stadium rock for me but I like the comments so far and your honesty. Maybe a bit too honest at times, if I liked James Blunt (which I assure you I don't) I certainly wouldn't proclaim my love on the internet ;) Have you heard any of The Hold Steady or The Gaslight Anthem? I think you'd like them.

Thank you michael. The Cure and Depeche Mode have been greatest hits album artists for me but those albums you referenced are on my wish list for one day.

Well done on the chart. re-listening to 1,100 albums. That is some feat!!! Though enjoyable of course :) I thought my collection was big!! Bit too much metal there for my tastes but like lots of the albums. Been trying to listen to Bruce recently as dont know any of his stuff really other than Best Of. Must check out Born To Run. And also Led IV. Again im stuck on Best of there!! Have you listened to The Cure - Disintigration & Depeche Mode - Violator??
