Top 100 Greatest Music Albums by gtroda (2013)

« View previous chartView next chart »

I have been working on a massive update of all my charts based on feedback received here and in the forums. I am going through the process of listening to all of the albums that I own (over 1100 in various formats!) to determine what order they should all be ranked. I'm about 85% complete with the listening so there may still be changes coming but I think I've completed the major framework.

I find that most of these albums I can relate to a certain time or place in my life and that adds to what makes them special. They may not all be the most techically proficient or groundbreaking, but they mean something to me and that's what I've decided to base my chart on.

I will come back and add notes to each album gradually over time.

TenPearl Jam
Any of my top three albums could easily hold the number one spot. Of the three, Ten is probably the one that doesn’t get as much respect, but it’s the one I have the most personal connection with. Before I heard of Pearl Jam I was mostly listening to Top 40 radio stations. Then I heard “Alive” and it woke something up inside me. I distinctly remember sneaking out of the house, getting on my bike, and riding to the nearest store to buy the cassette tape. I had to have it. From that point on I have been obsessed with listening to music. I have listened to this album countless times since then and I can still sing along with every word. I think it’s that sing-along anthem style combined with the survivor aspect of the lyrics that spoke to me then and still speaks to me today.

Blister SoulVigilantes Of Love
The Vigilantes of Love (VoL) are my favorite band that no one has heard. Prior to Blister Soul the VoL albums had a primary folk or folk rock sound. For Blister Soul they plugged in the guitars and added some rock crunch. The album alternates between these two extremes in sound very effectively featuring full out rock songs like “5 Miles Outside of Monroe” and the title track to folk style songs like “Parting Shot” and a reprise of the title track. As typical for VoL, the lyrics are an essential piece to the puzzle. They are challenging, thoughtful, and inspirational throughout.

Achtung BabyU2
At the end of the 80s U2 was the largest band in the world but they were clearly tired and at the end of their rope. Bono famously ended the Rattle and Hum tour saying they were going to go away for a while and dream it all up again. The fact the band almost broke up is well documented. When they reemerged in 1991 with Achtung Baby it sounded like a totally different band. They took a huge risk and dramatically reinvented their sound. In a lot of ways they produced their best and most consistent album in the process. I like every song on this album. I like the quasi-dance beats mixed with rock sounds. I like the sound of Edge’s guitar. I like that Bono is suddenly singing about personal subjects instead of political ones. I love the song “One” so much that it probably is my favorite song of all time, and not just because it is widely credited with saving my favorite band.

Jesus Freakdc Talk
Jesus Freak was a major pivotal album for the Christian music industry. Not only was it a huge success on the Christian charts, but it achieved crossover success on mainstream radio as well. DC Talk’s three main members combined their various musical influences to create a truly innovate (and Grammy winning) album that effortlessly combines the sounds of rock, hip-hop, soul, folk, and pop. They don’t compromise their message but they manage to get that message across without coming across as “preachy”. There are songs that uplift, songs about love, and songs that challenge. This album changed the Christian music industry forever and proved that “Christian music” didn’t have to sound like “church music”.

CrashDave Matthews Band
Dave Matthews Band is a tremendous live outfit and really shines on their live outings. Crash is the album that best captures the spirit of their live act on a studio album. The songs still sound fresh and jam oriented but don’t get too carried away with it. Most of these songs had been road tested for years so they were able to work the kinks out. And they were some of the catchiest songs the band ever came up with.

Throwing CopperLive
When I went to college there was a group of guys I hung out with that loved this album. They played it night and day so if you were in the dorm you had no choice but to listen. We all sang along and learned every part. Then Live came and gave an on campus concert and put on a great show. This album has been a favorite ever since and always transports me back to that time in my life. This album mixes together a lot of my favorite musical elements including thoughtful lyrics, anthem-like sound, sing-a-long choruses, and lots of different dynamics.

Fair play for putting a load of artists that get a lot of stick of your chart; Snow Patrol, Bryan Adams etc, can't say I agree with them but good on you for sticking with them, apart from that I really like the chart despite only sharing 6 albums.

For some reason I gave this chart a 60/100 sometime in the past, for whatever reason, but looking over it now it deserves better than that. Nice chart.

I actually really enjoy some of your metal/prog and 90s alt-rock picks. Other than that, there is just not much here for me, sorry :( Obviously, it isn't personal...And, as I find myself asking way too often lately, please don't feel the need to be one of those people who immediately counters with a low rating out of spite.

Bit too much stadium rock for me but I like the comments so far and your honesty. Maybe a bit too honest at times, if I liked James Blunt (which I assure you I don't) I certainly wouldn't proclaim my love on the internet ;) Have you heard any of The Hold Steady or The Gaslight Anthem? I think you'd like them.

Thank you michael. The Cure and Depeche Mode have been greatest hits album artists for me but those albums you referenced are on my wish list for one day.

Well done on the chart. re-listening to 1,100 albums. That is some feat!!! Though enjoyable of course :) I thought my collection was big!! Bit too much metal there for my tastes but like lots of the albums. Been trying to listen to Bruce recently as dont know any of his stuff really other than Best Of. Must check out Born To Run. And also Led IV. Again im stuck on Best of there!! Have you listened to The Cure - Disintigration & Depeche Mode - Violator??
