Top 100 Greatest Music Albums by quizking (2013)

After many months - an update - and a custom chart to numbers 101 to 200 almost ready too. WOOHOO - now with added notes for all the albums. I've put the notes within the chart, so that they read next to my other comments - rather than individually with the albums, to be read against other peoples comments. That's because for some albums, my comments might not be about the music at all, but what I was doing when first heard it, or some unrelated anecdote. And doubtless some people might think i'm not taking it very seriously (so i'm probably thinking that you take it too seriously). So it goes.

Nearly ready to post the custom chart for numbers 101 to 200 as well. No idea if have heard enough music, or am adequately "qualified" to be able to compile a meaningful list of 200 or even more albums - up until about six years ago I owned or at least had copies of nearly 4000 albums, but "owning" any sort of collection seems to be a redundant concept now that we have access to free streamed music 24-7-365.

Chart updated: 02/11/2013 16:19 (Created: 10/14/2011 17:53). Chart size: 100 albums.

The NightflyDonald Fagen
"He's an artist, a pioneer, We've got to have some music on the new frontier". Perhaps a very unlikely choice of favourite album for a rock fan, as it is a most un rock-like album. As with most records in this top 100 (and prevents some albums making the list, or even my top 200) it "holds together", it has specific sound, a theme which a compilation of hits could never have. This album has been a soundtrack to my life through love affairs, travels, business successes and failures - the tone of The Nightfly is optimistic (it's written from the perspective of the late fifties), and it has been my number one absolute favourite for over 20 years. Perhaps it might be yours too one day. Though I know of several people who absolutely hate it. [top 100 tracks - i.g.y., maxine]

*Jenny sings Lenny* When I first joined BEA I had to enter this album's details myself as no-one else had thought to have it as a favourite, how bizarre. Many readers will know most of the songs already: check this album out as the vocals are better (er, that's why Lenny hired Jenny as a backing vocalist in the first place) and the production is excellent - by Roscoe Beck, and arrangements by Van Dyke Parks. Apparently there's an expanded 20th anniversary edition out there, so someone else must like it too. [top 100 tracks - first we take manhattan, song of bernadette]

TapestryCarole King
As a kid, I was deeply suspicious of any music that all "old" people (you know, anyone over about 22) seemed to like, and every adult in the western world did seem to own Tapestry. Yet as years have passed, this album has crept higher and higher up my list, and now i've introduced it to other friends; just recently, one decided immediately that it was her new favourite album ever. Sure, it helped that she had heard most of the songs already elsewhere, but she hadn't realised they were all written by the same person. Turns out the old people were right all along. Hate it when that happens. [top 100 track - will you still love me tomorrow]

AjaSteely Dan
"They got a name for the winners in the world, I want a name when I lose, They call Alabama "the crimson tide", call me deacon blues" I went for years without knowing what any of the lyrics on steely dan albums really meant, luckily radio programmers didn't know either or else the dan wouldn't have sold so many records. Still don't understand most of them, but am confident that much rudeness and salacious behaviour is involved; i'd be most disappointed to discover otherwise. (There is now an online steely dan dictionary which helps with many of their more obscure references) [top 100 tracks - aja, deacon blues]

BlueJoni Mitchell
Borrowed a copy of this from a teacher when I was sixteen; doubtless a like-minded soul who saw that I should have been born a few years before, and would have made an archetypal hippy. Seems I missed out on the free love and drugs. Though if anyone's got some free love going spare, am sure you can track me down in london via my website, the link is here somewhere. Blood On The TracksBob Dylan
Woah, this has shot up in my chart over the last few months - would hear snatches of songs in the most random of places, walking past shops, on car radios, all prompting me to play the album a couple more times, not having played it for maybe ten years or more. Now my favourite Dylan album by a stretch. Am guessing you have to live life a little before you can relate.

OK ComputerRadiohead
Think I played this every day for a fortnight on release. A barman at one of my local hostelries still has "paranoid android" on the jukebox whenever he's working; not standard fare for backing music in a pub, but no-one seems to mind. I've also heard it played on the in-house radio station at Morrisons supermarket. Don't know how that affects sales, either positvely or negatively.[top 100 track - paranoid android]

"Just a kiss, just a kiss, I have lived just for this" The soundtrack to many of my journeys around america in 1992, the cassette nearly wore out. Just by virtue of travelling at the time, this is possibly the first "favourite album" of mine that I never actually owned a vinyl copy of. I still prefer vinyl.

RevolverThe Beatles
Impossible to say when first heard this, as every track seems to be part of the background music that follows you around. I was four months old when this was released - and "rubber soul" was released four months before I was born. Unlikely i'll ever get a chance to mention that to paul - as he's apparently a teetotaller; last time he was in one of the bars I frequent in london town, he suggested to the bar manager that they should stock more non-alcoholic beers. Good job he kept with the day job rather than go into the pub trade. [top 100 track - for no one]

Kind Of BlueMiles Davis
Whoah, one of the many albums sitting around unplayed for years, then something sparks my attention and it's on my headphones non-stop, hence a big leap up the chart for me last year. And you notice it everywhere - recently on the soundtrack of a documentary about the beatles first visit to america. Which may seem odd, but didn't sound out of place.

Much respect for your love of Donald Fagen/Steely Dan...also King Crimson, Bowie, Beatles and Rundgren. Get Happy!! really is Costello's best work and way too many people don't realize it. And finally, I love your This Mortal Coil pick. Their cover of "Song to the Siren" is simply enchanting and one of my all-time favorites.
